A SUMMARY OF THE WEATHER OF MARCH 2011

MARCH 2011---SUMMARY

The average temperature for the month was very close to the long-term average. Days were just 0.5 degrees above normal, but nights were spot on the long-term average. The month's highest temperature was 14.2 on the 24th, well below the 2003 record of 17.6, while the lowest temperature of -5.1 on the 18th, came nowhere near the record of -11.2 in 1986.
There were 12 air frosts & 21 ground frosts. On the 18th, the ground minimum was 6.6 degrees lower than the air minimum, a reflection of the fact that this site is flat & grassy.
There were 6 days when sleet or snow were observed to fall, but only on 4 mornings was snow covering at least 1/2 the ground at site level. The greatest snow depth was just 3cms.but some higher, outlying places had considerably more on one or two occasions.
Rainfall was below the long-term average, the 66.2mms being only 81% of the normal amount. 73% of the rainfall total fell on the 4 wettest days.
All in all, March 2011 will not be one that will stick in the memory, weatherwise. No records were broken, but at least the month, in the main, was benign enough.
