BOXING DAY

Note that the river has returned to a more normal level.  In the distance, a late- in- the- day small mist band is being intensified by chimney smoke---an indication that a temperature inversion, with cold heavier air is filling the valley bottom. This was a feature for most of the day, with more extensive mist bands lying within the valley & its lower slopes (see the last photograph below)

At the time the photograph was taken (about 1430), the valley bottom was clear of mist, which was instead affecting around the High School, Moulin & Kinnaird, though a little higher, the view opened out & visibility was very good.

Tuesday 25 December 2012

The Technical Team have woken up & opened their presents, meanwhile the Photographic Team have been climbing above Pitlochry to get you this fine shot of Christmas Morning Mist in the valley.

Yours truly got a jumper with a sunny interval & rain shower symbol on the front, so if in the future, you see a guy wearing such an item of clothing in town, it will very likely be me!!

It's still only a little above 1 degree at noon (a valley inversion).

                               A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS

Unfortunately, due to a technical fault, we are unable to use the normal format this morning.
Some adjustments were made yesterday & this has resulted in a failure of the system.
Owing to it's being Christmas Day, the Technical Department is still in bed!

The observational & forecasting Team are, however, working normally, though with a short delay due to getting food out of the freezer.

Temp. at 0900   0.0      Yesterday's maximum   5.2    Overnight minimum  -0.2

24hr rainfall (up to 0900hrs)  3.3mms

Currently, the weather is dry, though nippy-----absolutely perfect for a nice, long walk!

Much of the day will be dry, though showers will be developing over Western areas & the odd one may reach Pitlochry. There is still some valley mist around, adding to the delights of taking that Christmas morning walk.

Today's maximum temperature should reach about 4 degrees, with a slight frost tonight.
Winds will be light & variable in direction.

Have a lovely day!!  Barry

Monday 24 December 2012

Our children back at Christmas 2010. They are unfamiliar with snows of this depth & their "snowman-making" skills are not fully developed!  (I had originally sent them out to clear the drive, hence the presence of the snow-pusher!!   Incidentally, the overnight minimum to start Christmas Eve had been -12.8.

Thanks to the support of all my "regulars" & please continue to "tune in"

Scenes like this may well be on the way in the coming 36 to 48 hours.  High rainfall totals are expected locally, as fronts become slow-moving over the area, giving persistent & sometimes heavy rain, especially tonight & for most of tomorrow, finally dying out during Friday. There is a likelihood of some flooding.

The mountainous areas to the north & north east of us, where land exceeds around 800 to 900 metres are likely to receive heavy snowfalls.
