Attractive ALTOCUMULUS CLOUD over the area early yesterday morning. (Some experts might suggest this is closer to cirrocumulus, which is a higher-level cloud.

Yesterday was the first occasion this winter to be an "ICE DAY".  This means that the temperature between 0900Hrs yesterday & 0900Hrs today, failed to reach freezing point.

Such events are not uncommon in any severe winter month. For instance, in December 2010, there were no fewer than 16 of them, with the coldest day of all only reaching -7.7.  "Ice Days" often occur when snow is lying, as most of any incoming warmth from the sun is reflected back into the atmosphere.

It would appear that Met Office predictions for December 2012, suggesting a month of below average temperatures & most of any precipitation falling as snow, may soon be on the verge of departing from expectations somewhat. Latest outlook suggest an unsettled westerly spell is just over the horizon.
