The last day of February & meteorologically speaking, the last day of the winter season (In reality, of course, March is quite capable of being a cruel month---1947 was as good as example as any--- for older readers!!)
On the face of it, Feb 2015 hasn't been too severe a month, but full details will only become available tomorrow after the final maximum  temp.& rainfall figure for the month have been read.

I  took a trip on the train to Inverness yesterday;  something magic about it that you don't quite capture on the A9.    In both directions, the train chanced to stop at Dalwhinnie (several don't, as it really is a wee place).
There must have been 10 inches of snow lying there, though part of the platform had been cleared. At an altitude of 350ms, this is undoubtedly the highest station on a main line in Britain.
It is also well-known in the weather-world as being one of the coldest villages in Britain (Tomintoul is in a similar category, but to my knowledge does not have a weather station). Dalwhinnie does & it's in the grounds of the distillery. Sometimes it is shown in my newspaper as having been the coldest place in the U.K. the previous day.
Unfortunately, newspapers often show the coldest places as Cairngorm or Aonach More (Ben Nevis). This is really a waste of time as they are ski resorts, not permanent settlements & over 3000feet anyway---a case, as Basil Fawlty might say, of stating the bleeding obvious!

.I had a sneak preview of February's temperatures to date; mean max is very slightly above average, mean min half a degree above & as the remaining few days are swings between average & rather cold, the end result is going to be pretty close to the February normal.  Rainfall is still well below, but there are likely to be relatively small additions before March 1st, so still a dry month on the cards.

.12cms of snow with me this morning (rather more than BBC Weather suggested). The rainfall equivalent of all this (achieved by pouring a measured amount of hot water into the funnel of the rain gauge, which must then be subtracted from the total amount measured), makes the past 24hrs by far the wettest this month, though this is still well down on average.
There should be a steady thaw today, with any showers rather on the sleety side, so a choice of shovelling away on snow-clearing ,or letting nature slowly take its course!

Weather-related public transport delays included the 1019 train to Glasgow which was 70 mins late, while the service to London Kings Cross was 22 mins down.  (Incidentally, from March 1st, East Coast ceases to exist, replaced by Virgin East Coast (90% owned by Stagecoach).
National Express coach service to Coventry, left Pitlochry 35 mins late this morning presumably due to A9 problems coming from Inverness.

At time of observation, there was little more snow lying than just a "subtle" reminder that it was still only February. However, the brisk walk down for the newspaper, saw the rate at which snow was falling increase somewhat, bringing thoughts that it might become necessary to resort to a session with the snow pusher.
At least BBC Weather doesn't seem to expect more than a couple of centimetres lying.
I'm still optimistic that February is going to end up very dry, even allowing for some less- than- settled conditions in the closing days of the month.

Evidence of a slight overnight snow flurry & certainly a wintry flavour promised for Sunday/Monday. However,as we enter the final week of February, it would appear that the month has been reasonably kind to us. Not so for parts of the USA, where it appears some spectacular "icing-up" has been occurring of late.

A few spots in N.E. Scotland managed 16 degrees yesterday (beats all-time Feb. record in Pitlochry, but that is
purely for geographical reasons, relating to the Cairngorms). It was, nevertheless, Pitlochry's mildest day so far this month. Despite the weather not being settled on some days between now & the month's end (even indications of some temporary snowfall on Sunday), I still think the month will end up being unusually dry.

Note that the maximum temperature for the last 24hours occurred at observation time this morning. This would be highly unusual in most months of the year, but less so in winter. This is because the time of maximum temperature on a winter's day is as much related to the air mass that is affecting the area as it is by the height of the sun in the sky. So it is not unusual for the highest temperature in a 24 hour period in winter to occur during the night.
Some spots on the Moray Firth coast could top 15 degrees today (helped by the warming of air from the S to SW descending from the Cairngorms)

A moderate frost in the early part of the night, though this cleared by dawn as cloud & wind increased. Pressure is high once again & though the remainder of February will see some frontal activity on occasions, this is likely to be generally weak, with rainfall amounts still on the small side. Say what you like about the first half of February, but the fact that stands out above all else has been its dryness. Only 0.2mm has been recorded & further more, the amount of rain promised for this weekend & for much of next week is very little. Remember, the February record low rainfall total stands at 13mm; are we likely to beat that? Well with 2 weeks to go, that would be foolish to speculate, but looking at the charts, it may be possible, ( even if it took a European high giving very cold easterly winds to achieve it--- & I'm not sure this would prove popular with the majority!)
