A WARM WELCOME TO PITLOCHRY WEATHER!

THE ONLY ONLINE WEATHER SERVICE WHERE THE OBSERVER LIVES & RECORDS IN PITLOCHRY

SUMMARY FOR JANUARY 2014

The month was slightly colder than average, but very wet.

The mean maximum temperature was -0.5, the mean minimum just -0.1 from the long-term average.  Frequent alternations between mild SW interludes & colder spells with NW winds were a strong feature of the month. On 8 occasions, temperatures reached into the mild category, but on 7, were quite close to freezing over a 24hour period. This variability, lacking either a prolonged mild spell or conversely a prolonged cold spell, meant that, overall, no records in temperature, averages or extremes for January were broken.
There were,incidentally, 16 air frosts & 24 ground frosts.

The rainfall total (which of course includes sleet & snow) was excessive for the month(160%) & the Tummel was often in spate. However, we only have to go back to 2008 to find a wetter January. Snow actually fell on 15 days, but amounts were mostly insignificant, except for the 14th when 16cms were measured here

All in all, perhaps January 2014, will be regarded as a " let -off" for a winter month in Highland Perthshire?
