THE EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING IN THE ARCTIC, OPENS UP THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE TO CRUISE SHIPS

A cruise company is advertising a cruise in August 2013 which starts in Iceland & ends up in Alaska via the Northwest Passage. Such is the rate of summer ice melt, that a route which a few years ago would have been unthinkable, has become feasible.

The ship is scheduled to leave Iceland, pass the southern tip of Greenland, proceed northwards along the west coast of Greenland before turning westwards to pass north of Baffin Island. From there it continues through the Parry Channel to Victoria Island, through the narrow Prince of Wales Strait, into the Amundsen Gulf & Beaufort Sea & to Alaska.

THE GENERAL WEATHER PATTERN AROUND THE BRITISH ISLES
Pressure is high over Mid-Atlantic, but still low over the northern part of the North Sea. The situation is actually far from settled overall, with Sunday's chart again featuring a deep low in the SW approaches.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
It's a case of rain both to the south & north of the Pitlochry area.  We should remain dry for the bulk of the time, but there will be occasions when some light rain just clips into our area briefly. It is likely to remain mostly cloudy, but at times, the cloud will thin enough to give brighter skies. It will still be cool for the time of year with winds still from the NE around force 3 to 5.   TONIGHT should become dry, with some breaking of the cloud & a ground frost seems likely.

THE GENERAL WEATHER PATTERN AROUND THE BRITISH ISLES
There's a low pressure system right over Britain, with 2 belts of persistent rain affecting Scotland.  In the outlook period, pressure will remain high to our north & low to the south, meaning more days with E winds & below average temperatures.

TODAY'S WEATHER CHART LOOKS DECIDEDLY UNPLEASANT & IS NOT TYPICAL OF LATE APRIL. THE CENTRE OF THIS DEEP LOW IS IN THE WESTERN CHANNEL & THE ISOBARS (WHITE LINES) ARE TIGHTLY PACKED AROUND, MEANING STRONG WINDS IN MANY AREAS. THE BLACK LINES WITH RED HALF CIRCLES&BLUE TRIANGLES ON THEM, SHOW THE AREAS WHERE PERSISTENT BANDS OF RAIN ARE OCCURRING..
THINGS LOOK MORE SETTLED OVER THE MEDITERRANEAN & WESTERN ATLANTIC,WHERE HIGH PRESSURE HOLDS SWAY.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
A fresh scattering of snow near the summit of Ben Vrackie.   Today's weather charts have a mid-winter look to them, with numerous isobars round a deep low near SW England.   Today will be mostly cloudy, with rain at times, often fairly light, but with some moderate outbreaks too. There should also be some dry spells, as the highest rainfall totals are reserved for areas further to the NE of Pitlochry. Temperatures will be below average, with a maximum of only 8 or 9 degrees, while winds blow from the NE, sometimes up to force 5.   TONIGHT will be cloudy, with further rain on occasions.

Nothing more encouraging on offer! It is likely to be rather cloudy for much of the time, with some scattered showers around & about. Some dry intervals, with the odd sunny spell are also likely, perhaps more so during the evening..Maximum temperatures will be pegged around 10 degrees, with force 2 or 3 winds, mainly from the east.   The stormy-looking nature of the pressure charts at present is more in keeping with mid-winter than April & there seems little prospect of anything better for the rest of the month.

Still cool & showery with NE winds. Much of the morning should be mainly dry, with perhaps some sunny intervals. Probably dry for the first couple of hours, but thereafter, there is again a shower risk. YESTERDAY IN PITLOCHRYWe had a surprisingly lucky day for missing showers, as once again, the region's radar chart was plastered with them. Still, as I always say, it's very much hit & miss with showers (misses on Thurs & Sat & a hit on Friday!)
THE GENERAL WEATHER PATTERN AROUND THE BRITISH ISLES
1 low dying in the North Sea, a 2nd moving into the English Channel & a 3rd into the SW approaches by Wednesday. All a recipe for unsettled conditions, with cool E or NE winds for the week ahead.
TOMORROW'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRYAnother day of dry spells with some sunshine, interspersed with more cloudy bands with some showers. Still cool with a force 3 NE breeze.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
A rather unsettled day yet again, with largely cloudy skies & just a few sunny intervals in the drier spells. There are already showers around & more will develop, some being long-lasting & heavy. It is very much hit & miss & really unpredictable, as to what degree Pitlochry is affected (Thursday & Friday being contrasting examples of this). It will still be on the cool side & winds will be mainly light from an E quarter. Any late showers should die out after dark to leave clear spells & locally a touch of ground frost.

THE GENERAL WEATHER PATTERN AROUND THE BRITISH ISLES
Low pressure is still sitting over Britain & although this particular system should move out into the North Sea tomorrow, another one is set to take its place, moving into the SW approaches by Monday. Thus things remain rather cool & unsettled in the outlook!
TOMORROW'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY  Still the familiar theme of sunny intervals & some showers.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
An overnight rain belt is now nearly through & there will be some dry interludes, perhaps with a few sunny intervals. However, several lines of showers are expected to move across from the E & it seems inevitable that a few will affect Pitlochry, especially during the p.m. period. TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
Much of the day is likely to be rather cloudy, but there should be some sunny intervals too. The morning is expected to be mainly dry, with just the chance of an odd light shower. YESTERDAY IN PITLOCHRYSome wet snow for a time at first. The afternoon saw a few sunny intervals, though it was fairly cloudy overall. There were some heavy showers around, especially further south in the early evening, but Pitlochry largely escaped. Our heaviest shower was one around 2230. Rather cool yet again.
THE GENERAL WEATHER PATTERN AROUND THE BRITISH ISLES
A busy & very unsettled-looking pressure chart, with the worst of things for Southern England. Scotland is in an easterly flow to the north of the centre of low pressure.
TOMORROW'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRYA rather cloudy day with some showers or even some longer spells of rain. Very cool with a NE wind.

YESTERDAY IN PITLOCHRYThe day was dry, but still on the cold side. The morning had the lion's share of the sunshine & it became rather cloudy at times during the afternoon & evening.
