Rather more snow than expected yesterday (The amber warnings were a bit late coming out!!). 30cms have now accumulated = close on a foot..  NOTHING ACTUALLY "MILD" in the outlook, as this depth of snow takes some shifting.

A reassuring weather chart for those fed up with cold & snow, as a deep Atlantic low feeds milder SW winds & rain-bearing fronts across the British Isles by noon on Sunday.  The high pressure, responsible for bringing the cold E to SE winds across us during the past 10 days or so,  has now retreated well into Northern Europe

BUT---for the more immediate outlook--we have a few more hours of snow & cold to come.

Webcam of high quality, has now been added to FAVOURITE LINKS.  Those living out of town should find it interesting noting contrasts in weather/ground conditions etc  with their own .location.. It should also have meaning for those with an earlier association with Pitlochry, who now live hundreds or thousands of miles away.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
Overcast throughout the day. There are likely to be spells of snow for much of the time, though sometimes light, with possibly a few dry slots. Perhaps the snow may be heavier for a time this afternoon, with a few cms fresh snow accumulating. On land below about 150ms, the snow will become rather wet in texture later, as temperatures rise a degree or so above zero. Snow should largely die out during this evening & that may well be the end of falling snow for some time!

BEFORE OBSERVATIONS THIS MORNING,  SNOW DEPTH CAN BE SEEN FROM THE TOP OF THE THERMOMETER SCREEN.  THE SIDE LOUVRES ARE PLASTERED IN SNOW, WHICH WILL NEED REMOVING IN THE INTERESTS OF ACCURATE TEMPERATURE VALUES
.
THE RAIN GAUGE IS PARTIALLY BURIED, WITH SOME EXCESS SNOW OUTSIDE THE FUNNEL WHICH WILL NOT BE MEASURED. MEASURED AMOUNTS OF HOT WATER WILL NEED TO BE POURED INTO THE GAUGE & ONCE THE ADDED AMOUNT IS SUBTRACTED, IT WILL GIVE AN ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF THE RAINFALL EQUIVALENT OF THE SNOW THAT HAS FALLEN
.
BURIED BENEATH THE SNOW IS A GROUND THERMOMETER. THIS WILL NEED TO SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY BEFORE IT CAN GIVE MEANINGFUL READINGS.

Sunday 20 January 2013

                                                        KEEPING THINGS  IN PERSPECTIVE

Yes, we are in the middle of a cold spell & yes, snow has fallen with some regularity over the last 8 days; indeed there may be worse to come.
However, there has not really been severe cold, with temperatures having been no lower than -6.2 by night, while only 1 day has failed to reach zero by day. We simply haven't been subjected to Arctic or Siberian air streams, with a large displacement of the Jet Stream further south.

Last night, I watched an old documentary, in black & white, about the very severe winter of 1963. . In the area where I lived at the time, the cold began on Dec.19th & didn't loosen its grip until March 3rd. The documentary showed how many parts of Britain were effectively paralysed in terms of transport, water & energy supplies. It was as though Britain had been moved 10 or more degrees further North or several hundred miles into the heart of Northern Europe.

Pitlochry had a brief severe snap in January 1982, when around the 7th/8th, one day peaked at -10.9, with the adjoining night plunging to -19.6!

December 2010 should still be fresh in the memory, as virtually the entire month was severely cold. All but 4 days had snow lying (maximum depth 21cms). 16 days failed to reach zero & 27 nights had air frost. The mean temperature for the month was a staggering 6 degrees below the long-term average.      Barry

11cms of snow now lying, following last evening's showers. A little thawing yesterday, but this has now turned to ice.
TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
Generally rather cloudy, though there should only be the odd light flurry today. Perhaps brighter at times later on. Temperatures just below freezing for a couple of hours yet & then only reaching about +1 at best. Winds force 3 from ESE.  TONIGHT should see dry weather for much of the time & a few clear spells with a slight frost. Clouding up from the south well before dawn.
