AUGUST 2011 SUMMARY + SUMMER 2011 SUMMARY

AUGUST 2011 WAS,( NO SURPRISE), A COOL, WET MONTH, DEFICIENT IN SUNSHINE.  THE MEAN MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS A FULL 2 DEGREES BELOW THE LONG-TERM AVERAGE, WITH THE WARMEST DAY ONLY REACHING 21.8.   THE WARMEST DAY IN APRIL BEAT 30 DAYS IN AUGUST!  WE HAVE TO GO BACK TO 1986 TO FIND AN AUGUST WHERE THE DAY-TIME TEMPERATURES AVERAGED OUT LOWER THAN THOSE OF THE MONTH JUST GONE.   ONLY 2 DAYS EXCEEDED 20 DEGREES, WHILE 9 DAYS FAILED TO REACH 16.

AUGUST 2011 HAD A MEAN MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF JUST 16.8.  THE EQUIVALENT TEMPERATURE BACK IN 1995 WAS 22.9----WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

THE RAINFALL TOTAL OF 133.1mms WAS 179% OF AVERAGE, WITH THE 2 WETTEST DAYS ACCOUNTING FOR 50% OF THAT TOTAL. THE FIRST HALF OF THE MONTH WAS MUCH WETTER.  IT WAS THE WETTEST AUGUST SINCE 2004.

SUMMER 2011 HAD 321mms OF RAIN---64% ABOVE NORMAL   THE AVERAGE MEAN MAXIMUM (DAYTIME TEMPERATURE )  WAS 1 DEGREE BELOW THE LONG TERM AVERAGE.  ONLY ON 16 DAYS OUT OF 92, DID THE TEMPERATURE EXCEED 20 DEGREES.     A SUMMER BEST FORGOTTEN!                      BARRY 01/09/11
