SKARA BRAE, 17 miles W of Kirkwall, is a Stone Age Village dating from around 3000BC & inhabited roughly over a 500yr period. This archaeological treasure was revealed in 1850 after a severe storm& high tides washed away a blanket of sand that had been covering it.A properly co-ordinated excavation did not take place until 1927.
