ORKNEY

ORKNEY comprises 67 rocks, islands & skerries covering an area of 376 sq. miles extending 53 miles NNE & measuring some 23 miles from W to E. The population of 21,000 inhabit 30 of the islands, whilst the rest remain home to only  seals & seabirds.
Orkney is only 6 miles from the Scottish mainland & in KIRKWALL, set on the principal island called Mainland, you stand closer to Oslo than to London.. The town is the principal harbour & capital, having a population of approx.8,700. Its latitude is 58 59 N.
The highlights of Kirkwall & surrounds include Skara Brae, Stenness Standing Stones, St. Magnus Cathedral & Scapa Flow, some of which will feature in the next few photographs (published each evening ).
