SUMMARY---JUNE 2012

The month over large sections of Britain was truly appalling & for some, even disastrous, as depression after depression passed over us, with the jet stream steering these systems much further south than normal.
Excessive amounts of rain, including some violent storms & high rainfall intensities, affected a number of regions, resulting in flash floods & landslides.
Parts of Scotland, notably the far North West, avoided much of this misery. Stornoway had only 34mms of rain, whereas the average over England & Wales was 157mms, around 230% of average.
PITLOCHRY saw only 20mms of rain in the first 20 days of the month, though this total swelled to nearly 68mms by the close, just 10% above the long-term average.
Temperatures here, were below average, particularly by day(down 1.9 degrees) & the highest temperature only reached 20.5---which was well exceeded on 7 days towards the end of May!
There were no air frosts & only 2 ground frosts during the month. No thunder was heard nor hail seen at this site & all in all, we escaped the worst of what was on offer during June 2012.       Barry (01/07/12)
