FLAM is just a small farming community of 350 inhabitants, but attracts many tourists, including those on cruise ships.
The main attraction is the Flam Railway, built in 1940. (The infamous Dr Beeching would have had this first on his list for axing, had he been employed in Norway to rationalize their railways!!)
The line is a masterpiece of engineering, 12 miles in length & running from sea-level up to Myrdal at 2845ft.
Its steepest gradient is 1 in 18 & the train is fitted with 5 different sets of brakes, belt & braces to maximise safe operation..Myrdal is on the Bergen-Oslo line, so the Flam Railway does provide an excellent link with the rest of the country.
