PITLOCHRY----SEPTEMBER 2012
TEMPERATURES for the month were a little below the long-term average (mean max. 15.1 (-0.7) and mean min. 6.8 (-0.9).
The warmest day was the 8th at 22.2 degrees. Overnight on the 23rd, the thermometer fell to -0.9, the coldest of 3 air frosts on the 21st/22nd & 23rd. The lowest air temperature also had the lowest ground temperature of -3.8. None of the above figures set records.
RAINFALL was very low, probably ranking amongst the driest parts of the entire U.K. Despite considerable flooding during the final few days of the month in The Borders, North East & North West England, Pitlochry escaped all heavy rainfall brought by an unusually active depression. The Met Office failed to predict its actual movement & had weather warnings concerning rainfall for the whole of Perth & Kinross during the 24th & 25th.
So only 29% of the long-term average amount fell over the month, with the wettest day only accumulating 2.4mms.
Looking back at local-area records,I find that it has been 26 years since the town had such a dry September.
