Not far away from NAMASKARD, with its sulphur wells, hot springs, fumaroles & bubbling mud, KRAFLA, an active volcano, reaches a height of 2,650ft.(a little lower than Ben Vrackie). With a magma chamber a mere 2 miles beneath the surface, Krafla is far from extinct, with eruptions & earthquakes happening every year from 1975 to 1984..Icelanders much prefer volcanic activity to be little & often, rather than the rare but catastropic events!
