ALTOSTRATUS CLOUD---is a sheet/layer of cloud at a medium height (7,000 to 16,000ft.). It is both lower & more greyish than cirrostratus. This type of cloud may well tend to thicken to give rain. The sun or moon struggles to be seen in this type of cloud & in any event, would appear very watery.
