Today sees the start of a series of photographs from this year's holiday---a cruise to Iceland & Norway.
ICELAND is the 2nd largest island in Europe, lying just below the Arctic Circle. .It is a country with a fantastic array of features for anyone with an interest in physical geography or geology.
The landscape is jagged & rugged, sometimes friendly & welcoming, but more often primeval & inhospitable. The earth's crust here is thinner than in most places & the land is scored with deep cracks & fissures. The tectonic plates which meet beneath Iceland (the European & North American), result in intense volcanic activity. 200 of these have erupted since the last Ice Age, 30 of which have been periodically active in the last 1,000 years.
The above photograph shows a deep fissure, one of many thousands associated with movement of the tectonic plates. The landscape is literally on the move & the Icelandic people need to be aware that land & property they own may be subject to these movements.
However, it's not all bad news for Icelanders, because the geology of their homeland also encourages the presence of hot thermal springs providing huge supplies of cheap hot water for households & farmers alike.
