The month was both cooler & wetter than the long-term average.
The temperature overall, day & night, was 1.6 degrees below the figure for March 2012, an unusual departure from what is normally the case in our climate.
The highest temperature reached in April was 14.0 on the 29th (in March, we reached 21.7 on both the 26th & 27th).
The lowest temperature was -5.7 on the 5th, equalling the existing record from 1988.
There were 10 air frosts & 17 ground frosts.
April rainfall at 80.3mms was 165% of average. The month is normally one of the driest of the year.
As March this year was exceptionally dry (only 11.7mms), probably many people were glad to see the additional April rains, though on several occasions we just missed very heavy showers by a few miles.
Snow fell on 3 days, but only lay on the ground briefly, on the 3rd. 2 days saw some hail, but again, we narrowly escaped further heavy showers containing hail.
Overall, the month will be remembered for being cooler than March, never a popular feature for the vast majority of the population.
