                          SUMMARY OF JANUARY 2013 in PITLOCHRY

The month saw both temperatures & rainfall close to the long-term average for the area.

The mean maximum temperature at 4.5 was 0.8 below the average.
The mean minimum temperature at 0.1 was 1.0 above the average.

There were 17 air frosts & 26 ground frosts.

Temperatures ranged from +10.7 on the 4th to -6.2 on the 16th, with no record extremes for the local area being broken.

Total rainfall(a fair amount of it falling as snow)ended up very close to the long-term January normal. The fall of 104.5mms was 96% of the average.The highest fall in 24hrs was 15.1mms on the28th.

16 days saw sleet/snow falling, with 19 days with snow lying. The maximum depth at this site (140metres))was 30cms.

In summary, following a mild start to January 2013, much of the time from the 10th onwards was cold.The cold was never severe, the lowest maximum being -0.8, with the lowest overnight an unexceptional -6.2.However, in this period, there were regular falls of snow, with depths varying between 3 & 30cms at this altitude.
