TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

A clearance of cloud later in the night has resulted in a colder start, with much more dew on the grass. However, it should again be a delightful September day in Pitlochry, though some patchy cloud is likely to develop this afternoon. It's going to be warm for the time of year, with light winds.

MAX.TEMP   18          WIND  Light & variable but becoming mostly from the SE later.

MIN. TEMP OVERNIGHT is more problematic.  With a cloud cover,  as high as 8, but with mainly clear skies,as low as 3.

A few days ago, I admitted cloud amounts & minimum temperatures during this week were the big problem in forecasting!!

OUTLOOK---Continuing dry, possibly rather more cloud.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

Yesterday, I said that for possibly approaching 2 weeks, there would be little or no rainfall.
Don't worry, I haven't changed my mind!!  However, I also added that it was difficult to forecast cloud amounts & overnight temperatures, which, especially overnight, are very much linked ( The more cloud, the higher the overnight temperature  & at this time of year, with settled weather + clear skies, ground frost is usually a likely consequence ( the record low AIR temperature in Pitlochry between 1976 & 2014 was actually in 1995 (minus
2.5).  LOOK BELOW WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT!
MAX.TEMP   17         WIND   LIGHT & VARIABLE        TONIGHT  between 3 & 8 (totally depending on how much cloud around)-- Any specific figure is too much of a guess.

AHEAD.--- LITTLE IF ANY RAIN. THE BEST DAYS MAY HAVE SUNNY SPELLS (THOUGH " WALL TO WALL"
IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY. THE GREATEST THREAT OF A " POOR" DAY WOULD MOST LIKELY BE LOW CLOUD ORIGINATING OVER THE NORTH SEA.    IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES (ESPECIALLY IF THERE IS NO IMPROVEMENT BY MID-MORNING), MOVING WEST MAY FIND THE SUN.

FORECASTING IS BASED ON MET OFFICE & BBC MATERIAL, WHICH IS THEN TAILORED FOR THE PITLOCHRY AREA, USING LOCAL KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE.         APOLOGIES FOR TODAY'S DELAY  (observations were still made at 9am)

The weather in all parts of Britain is notorious for it's changeability & variability, but just occasionally, meteorologists get the opportunity to be confident about SOME (though never all) aspects of the expected weather.
So, it is with a higher level of certainty than usual, to say---- HIGH PRESSURE WILL TOTALLY DOMINATE THIS WEEK'S WEATHER & POSSIBLY PART OF NEXT WEEKS & THIS MEANS VIRTUALLY NO RAINFALL FOR SEVERAL DAYS  AHEAD.

THERE'S ALSO A MEASURE OF CONFIDENCE ABOUT DAYTIME TEMPERATURES, WITH HIGHS IN A FAIRLY NARROW RANGE OF AROUND 15 to 18.  WINDS ON MOST DAYS ARE LIKELY TO BE LIGHT OR MODERATE.

AS FOR THE UNCERTAINTIES----CLOUD AMOUNTS  & MINIMUM TEMPERATURES, WITH THE TWO BEING VERY MUCH LINKED---CLEAR NIGHTS ARE USUALLY COLDER.

I met a gentleman yesterday afternoon, working outdoors, wisely clutching a large umbrella. I made some comment to the effect that he would need that before too long. His reply was most encouraging----
" Yes, I checked the radar before leaving home"      Great stuff!!

Today actually looks much better than was the case 24hrs ago. True, some areas of the far NE of Scotland won't be at their best ( to put it mildly ),  in fact there are still a few showers over the Southern Cairngorms, but I'm hopeful that in Pitlochry, it should stay dry, though don't expect warmth or wall to wall  sunshine!!

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

The morning is expected to remain dry, though cloud has increased just in the past hour or so.  There should still be at least some sunny intervals. The shower risk, however, is still there, probably around the time we're coming out of PFT ( say 4 to 5pm as a maximum risk period ).  Of course, spot shower forecasting is little better than betting in a horse race with 25 running!  Feeling rather on the cool & fresh side.
MAX TEMP  15          WIND W to NW force 2          MIN.TEMP OVERNIGHT  7

SUNDAY

A spell of very wet weather is predicted for  further N & E of Pitlochry, ( but still dangerously close.)
However, at present, expectations are that we will only get the cloud from this system.
So, not a great day, sunshine at a premium & rather cool & breezy. Best temperature 14.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

Having been rather optimistic yesterday (although a few spots in Scotland DID make 22 degrees), I'm erring on the pessimistic side today!
At present---low cloud, poor visibility & light rain, as an Atlantic front trundles from NW to SE. This should have cleared through by lunchtime.  There should be some dry weather with much more broken cloud thereafter, but there is every likelihood that the odd shower will affect the area too.
Max.Temp, 17          Wind   Light & rather variable            Min Temp.TONIGHT  8

SATURDAY---A much brighter morning, with some sunshine. More cloud building later, with a risk of a number of showers developing for the p.m. period. Feeling a degree or two cooler as well

SUNDAY----Probably the better day of the weekend, with a much lower risk of showers, though sunshine amounts may well be limited. Feeling rather cool into the bargain.

FRIDAY---Rain at times, especially am. Drier & brighter later, though a little cooler than today.

WEEKEND----Dry for much of the time, with broken cloud & spells of sunshine, but best take an umbrella as there will be some well-scattered showers around (better safe than wet!). A degree or two cooler than recently, but overall, could be worse.
