WEDNESDAY 16th JULY

A WARM WELCOME TO PITLOCHRY WEATHER!
THE ONLY ONLINE WEATHER SERVICE WHERE THE OBSERVER LIVES & RECORDS IN PITLOCHRY, USING PREVIOUS MET OFFICE CLIMATE STATION EXPERIENCE. FORECASTING IS BASED ON MET OFFICE & BBC MATERIAL, WHICH IS THEN TAILORED FOR THE PITLOCHRY AREA, USING LOCAL KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE.

                                 APOLOGIES ARE CALLED FOR!!
Unfortunately, this morning's forecast for this afternoon's weather went badly wrong.  However when I tell you that I was in a similar boat (quite an appropriate pun ), the amusement may go some way to comfort those who got soaked earlier this afternoon.  My thanks must go to a very kind local couple who know me & also that I am "Pitlochry's Weatherman". Were it not for their kindness,--- without car, raincoat or umbrella. I would have reached home looking like a drowned rat.
After making an urgent phone call, I have since spent time finding out what actually happened.

It was not a freak isolated shower, but a north/south rain band of varying width ( Pitlochry had a greater width than the average). The rain band stretched from Scotland's North Coast to Dumfries & Galloway, so most areas would have had some heavy rain for an hour or so. I regret not seeing a radar image before I went out ( sometimes I fail to practise what I suggest my readers should do).

Out of interest, the temperature had already reached 20.1 before the rain came. The amount of rain
here was  6.9mms(but I'm sure other places (not far away) could have had more or less.  Bands of rain are usually associated with fronts. Although this was a cold one & did turn the wind from SE to W or NW,
there is no reason to expect any plunge in temperature. It may, in fact ,be warmer as the week goes on.

Sorry once more,  Barry (16/07/14 )

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

.
Max.temp. 19 to 21     Wind  Starting SE, but veering to W  force 2 or 3 in the main,    Overnight Minimum in double figures ( for the 8th time this month. Average is 10.4, over the last 38yrs)

TOURISTS (we never forget you!) --- Sorry about the morning, but the afternoon should be better. The warmest & sunniest spots today may well be at East Coast resorts, once the wind turns into the W later on today.

OUTLOOK----Looking at the next 5 days, I have to use that over-worked word "CHANGEABLE!
It is however an appropriate word for what's likely to come. Much of the time should see temperatures
peaking in the 20 to 25 range, but humidity levels will be high. Nights will sometimes be too warm for many.

Apart from Thursday (when it promises to be dry & pleasant), the days following are subject to heavy showers or even hail &/or thunder. But as I often add, in such situations,  some places will have large rainfall totals,
possibly localise flooding, while other spots, not too far away, get little or nothing.
An umbrella or light plastic mac will be essential, but could, in the event, turn out unnecessary.

Remember, high ground is often more prone to the worst showers & torrential, violent downpours are usually limited to small areas.  I have recently put on 2 NEW LINKS.  The Met Office (NOT WOW) site contains a rainfall radar map, This clearly picks out very heavy rain, showing both where it is now & predicted to be in the hours to come. Of course, predictions can be wrong!!
