OCTOBER 2011 turned out to be a little warmer than the long-term average. The mean maximum temperature of 12.4 was 0.5 of a degree up on average, while the mean minimum (overnight ) figure of 6.7 was almost 2 degrees up on normal, the mildest October night figure since 2006.
Our area did not share in the early October heatwave enjoyed by many parts of Southern & Eastern England. Here,. the top temperature for the month was just 16.7 on the 6th. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of temperature was that no air frost occurred during the month, this being somewhat unusual. There were, however, 9 ground frosts, emphasising that on clear, calm nights, it is the ground itself that loses heat the most readily before the colder values are transferred to the air above.
Many people will suspect that October was a wet month. Actually, the fall of 102.5mms only represents 97% of the long-term average, as October is one of the wettest months in the majority of years. In addition to this, they were a large proportion of days that had relatively small totals of rain, after many hours of light rain or drizzle.
On both the 17th & 18th, Ben Vrackie had a light snow cover on its summit, but milder weather was soon to return.
