                                           SUMMARY FOR APRIL 2014

The month had more than its fair share of winds from between E and SE, & with the North Sea at its coldest, Pitlochry sometimes suffered the cool, cloudy conditions imported from the sea, while sheltered spots in NW Scotland fared much better.
However, overall, the average maximum temperature was 2 degrees above average, helped considerably by temperatures in excess of 16 on 4 occasions, the highest being 20.4 on the 28th.
The average minimum temperature was almost 2 degrees above average, with very few air frosts & nothing below -2. Cloudy nights were primarily responsible for this.
Following the very mild winter, April certainly had no sting in its tail either on the frost or snow front.

April's rainfall of 48.2mms was just on the long-term average (the month is usually the driest month of the year, both here & in many other parts of Britain). The wettest day was the 25th, with 15.7mms.

So all in all, not a memorable month, but probably one that gardeners & growers will be well-satisfied with.            Barry(01/05/14)
