Pitlochry station, with The Great Britain VI steam excursion on Sat. 27th April

SUMMARY of the weather during APRIL 2013

The month began very much as March had ended, with a very cold & biting easterly air stream. This continued for much of the first fortnight. After that episode, temperatures generally reached between 10 & 14 degrees, by day, for the remainder of the month.

The mean maximum temperature for the whole month was 10.1 degrees ( about 1.2 below the long-term average.)  This gives April 2013 the coldest days of any April since 1998.
The mean minimum temperature was 1.6 ( about 1.1 below the long-term average) & exactly the same as last year's figure.

The month's highest temperature was 14.2 on the 19th (way off the record ), while the lowest temperature of -5 on the 6th wasn't far behind the record of -5.7, set only a year ago.
There were 9 air frosts & 17 ground frosts, emphasising it usually gets colder overnight at grass-tip levels. Snowfall was insignificant with only 4 days with it falling & just 1 with it lying  ( only 1cm)

The rainfall total was just 53.1mms (109%of the long-term average). The Tummel rose very high at one stage, this mainly due to high ground snow melt.  64% of the total fell on just 3 days, with very little falling after the 17th.           ( Barry 01/05/13)
