.PITLOCHRY WEATHER SUMMARY FOR FEB. 2015
February 2015 was very close to the long-term average with regards to temperature.
The mean maximum of 6.4 was just 0.3 above average, while the mean minimum of -0.1 was also just 0.3 above average.February was, however, clearly the mildest of the 3 winter months of 2014/15.
During February, The thermometer ranged between -6.2 & +10.8, with no records broken. There were 15 air frosts & 19 ground frosts.
Up until the 21st of the month, rainfall amounts were exceptionally low (only11.3mm), but the dominance of low pressure in the final week, saw this total rise to 53.3mm (still only 69% of normal & convincingly the driest winter month, 119mm fell in Dec & 174mm in Jan) .At this site(140ms),6 days saw snow falling & 9 snow lying, but places even within Pitlochry may have differed. Met Office regulations are very precise over both snow falling & snow lying. For instance, 2 minutes of sleet falling would be classed as a day of snow falling. If over 50% of the ground at the same height as the weather station has snow lying to any depth at 0900hrs, it is counted as a day with snow lying!!!. Such are the demands of the Met Office on its team of observers.
