1630  UPDATE===THUNDER HEARD.  The centre of a very heavy shower is passing to the east of PITLOCHRY & we may stay on its western fringe

YESTERDAY

While the vast majority of people enjoyed hot & sunny weather  (many places attaining the highest temperature of the year), a few unlucky guys, including a relative of mine, spent the day stranded on oil rigs, as helicopters, due to take them back to the mainland, were grounded by shallow but dense sea fog.  East Coast resorts, in some cases, were little warmer than Cairngorm Summit ( just over 4000ft  above sea level!! )

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

Most of the day should remain dry, though with more cloud in general & only sunny intervals. It will still feel warm, though temperatures are expected to be 2 degrees down on yesterday's.
The evening promises some much needed rain, with Atlantic fronts responsible, but while significant amounts MAY occur (should we catch a thundery downpour), there is no guarantee & gardeners could be disappointed with overall totals.

Maximum Temperature 25             Wind   SE2          Overnight low temperature 14

OUTLOOK----Mainly dry & partly cloudy, though some sunshine likely at times on most days. A few showers may affect us, but with little certainty of much if any rain. Temperatures will become much nearer to normal ( 18 to 20 maximum ), though nights may remain on the mild side. Winds will become more westerly, up to force 4 at times.

ROUND & ABOUT at 4PM----TEMPERATURES

PITLOCHRY   27,     CAIRNGORM SUMMIT  17,    PETERHEAD  17,    St ANDREWS   20,

ULLAPOOL  21,     STORNOWAY  20,    EAST KILBRIDE  29,    DUNBARTON  26

FALKIRK  27.

Many places, including Pitlochry & the Glasgow area, had their warmest day of the year yesterday. Highest temperatures were widely in the range 26 to 29 as a maximum.
As often happens in a south-easterly heatwave, the exception to the rule were places close to the East Coast, just a few examples by late afternoon included Berwick 19,  St Andrews  17,  Wick  17.
Of course, there are always people who prefer this level of heat & I am no lover myself of warm humid nights when sleeping can prove difficult.
Occasionally, the highest temperature of the day,in the entire U.K. can be in Scotland, especially when moist, warm winds descend after crossing the Cairngorms. The Aberdeen/Inverness areas sometimes falls into this category.
One place in the remote Northern Highlands-ALTNAHARRA-(Lairg to Tongue road)--can boast that on one occasion, it was both the coldest & warmest place in Britain on the SAME DAY.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

Unlike yesterday, we're off to a glorious start from the word "go". Wall to wall sunshine is expected with very little cloud & once again temperatures should reach high values.

Max Temp. 25/26         Wind SE 2          Overnight low temp. 14

At present, the Firth of Forth as well as parts of the North Sea are covered in haar, so once again tourists should appreciate that coastal resorts in the east are certain to feel "bracing". Yesterday many East Coast towns were stuck on around 17 degrees, while the Highlands & the west generally, were  10 degrees warmer!
WEEKEND---Still some spells of dry, bright weather, though there is likely to be more cloud around & perhaps a few showers as well, though I doubt enough to put a smile on gardeners' faces. Temperatures are likely to be a little down on recent days, with something of a fresher feel,as winds turn more to the west.

YESTERDAY--- Not quite as warm as Tuesday (SE breeze lasted much of the time, bringing that gentle touch of North Sea air with it ). However, Wednesday was still a lovely day locally, though several East Coast places only reached 16 degrees.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

Despite a very low cloud cover earlier this morning,  everything points to a day of prolonged sunshine, high temperatures & light winds.  TOURISTS REJOICE---BUT AVOID THE EAST COAST (cloud later to break, haar not too far out to sea & feeling much cooler with a breeze off the sea.)  I am well aware that some people prefer that to sunshine & heat, so just go where you feel happiest;  I simply give you the information !!

OUTLOOK for FRIDAY & WEEKEND

Much as today on FRIDAY.  WEEKEND, somewhat more changeable,as " Westerlies" set in.
Showers & more cloud likely with temperatures much nearer to normal, particularly by Sunday when winds will be fresher.

APOLOGIES
For not actually publishing  yesterday's data. Observations were still made at 9am ( & will be included in calculating July's averages.

YESTERDAY EVENING

We had an excellent reminder of the towns, mountains & lochs of the Scottish Highlands at Pitlochry Theatre & I'm proud to say, we'd been to most of them. To me, no finer scenery, on a clear day, beats  the panorama which includes Suilven, Canisp & Quinag.
Don't forget to record the excellent programme on clouds, while watching the Glasgow Commonwealth Games on TV this evening.

YESTERDAY & BEYOND
Many places in Scotland had their warmest day of the year so far (eg KINLOCHEWE).  PITLOCHRY had its warmest JULY day so far ( see below ), but was actually beaten on JUNE 18th ( 26.6 ).
Most readers will agree that the current spell is beautiful & expect more of the same for Today ( later) as well as on THURSDAY & FRIDAY.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

Yet again, a mild start. Unfortunately, we're in an area of low cloud that has spread in from the North Sea, often a temporary visitor to the town during settled spells with SE winds. I would be surprised if the cloud did not show signs of lifting & breaking by 10am & once it starts, blue skies & sunshine quickly follow. (For ever the optimist )

Max.Temp. 24         Wind   SE2       Overnight Min. Temp. 13

TOURISTS----Anywhere except East Coast Resorts (prone to lower temperatures & some haar ), should have lovely weather.
GARDENERS ---- Pitlochry is still short of rain, until at least Saturday.

Quite a pleasant Sunday, though there WERE still a few showers around. The evening in Pitlochry was particularly pleasant, with temperatures still close to 21 (70f ) at 7pm.
All the flooding yesterday seemed to be in & around Essex.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

Again, a very pleasant day is promised, whatever you're doing, but don't take chances on East Coast beaches being warm, as HAAR is around over the North Sea & may drift ashore.  The shower risk is much lower  today, the most prone areas being to the E & NE of Pitlochry, over the higher ground.

Maximum temperature  22/23 degrees      Wind NW initially, but becoming SE force 2      Overnight low  13

OUTLOOK----Pressure is building, so well done tourists for choosing PITLOCHRY this week!  Little or no rain is predicted, which means those pots & baskets will need watering, gardeners.  Don't expect wall to wall sunshine every day, though at least the sun should make a regular appearance. Occasionally, low cloud from the North Sea, can affect Pitlochry, though usually burns away as the sun rises higher. Winds should be light, days warm & nights mild.  Enjoy!!

Least said the better about yesterday; it was just the sort of day that those holidaying in Pitlochry wonder what they can do. Cloud was low, visibility much reduced, temperatures only up to a high of 18 & always the threat of rain which might have been very heavy. We seem to have missed the worst that affected the region.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

A good day ahead!!   Warm from the start (following this year's warmest night to date).
Partly cloudy with sunny intervals for much of the day.

Forecast radar shows a nasty shower between Pitlochry & the East Coast  at 7pm, which will need watching. Although this is not predicted to get any nearer to Pitlochry, it remains an outside possibility.
Otherwise, late afternoon & evening may well be the most sunny part of the day.

Max. Temp.  22         Wind   W or NW 2/3        Overnight    Dry & mild, probably above 13 degrees.

OUTLOOK---High pressure dominates, so looking good, with little or no rain on the cards. Temperatures should be in the low 70's each day (22/23 in modern currency). Some cloud around, but at least the sun likely to put in an appearance on most days .  ENJOY !!

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

A milder-than-average night ( for the 11th time this month), but currently looking pretty dreary!  Very little sunshine on offer today & although there will be a few dry spells, periods of rain are also likely, much of it either light or moderate in intensity.  There is no strong indication at the time of writing (9.15am) that any intense rainfall will affect us today, but you now know how to access the finest radar online to check for yourselves!  ( Parts of England have been hammered by thunderstorms overnight, but as they move north, they are losing their energy as they encounter lower temperatures.  Humidity will be high throughout.

Max. Temp. 18 (higher IF we got a long sunny spell)       Wind  E2         Tonight's lowest  13

OUTLOOK---Rather cloudy on most days, with sunny intervals rather than long spells of sunshine. Highest temperatures will be in a range 19 to 22, so could be worse, especially when only small amounts of rain seem likely.  All nights should remain well into double figures & winds will be between light & moderate..

Nothing alarming at present, but there is likely to be some light rain about overnight. The greatest risk of very heavy showers is Saturday p.m.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

Something of a "dog's dinner" today, with amounts of cloud & how much, if any rain, the big uncertainties.
Maximum Temperature  19 to 21       Wind    E to SE  3 or 4       Overnight minimum   14
                               East Coast 16

Both the morning & afternoon should stay dry with no heavy rain showing on the predictive rainfall radar chart before Saturday afternoon, though some light rain may fall before then.

OUTLOOK---Very unsettled with always the chance of some intense showers, perhaps with hail
& thunder & localised flooding. It should however stay on the warm side, with a few sunny intervals. Next week should start warm, though less humid when W winds return.
