                               WEATHER SUMMARY FOR AUGUST 2014

The month was both cooler & wetter than average, the mean Maximum temperature
by about 1.5 degrees, the mean Minimum by about 1 degree.
With 4 days still to go, the rainfall total is already up to 165%of the long-term average.

No temperature records were broken this August, though the Minimum of 0.6 on the 25th was not far short. Records show that this past month has been the only one since November 2013 to have had below-average temperatures.

The heavy rain of 38.1mms on the 10th resulted in a very rapid rise of the Tummel.

I have been delighted with the number of visits to the site during August. Numbers have frequently been in excess of 80 each day  & is very encouraging.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

A much milder night than recently, as low pressure & associated fronts spend the next couple of days close to Scotland. Despite the introduction of somewhat warmer air over the country, the weather will not be settled , overcast with a little rain for a time this morning, though improving before lunchtime. A period of dry weather is then likely, perhaps with the sun putting in intermittent appearances, but shower cloud will start to build up & inevitably there are likely to be a few showers around during the afternoon, even though some places may be lucky & miss the worst. The evening should become dry.
Max.Temp.  18 or 19 (feeling warmer, though more humid)   Winds   SE 2 or 3       Overnight   Mild again

FRIDAY---An unsettled day (though perhaps less so on the East Coast). Breezy from the S.

WEEKEND---Hopefully, a fair amount of dry weather, though generally, quite a lot of cloud around.

Partly cloudy, but also some sunny intervals this morning. this.  Some building up of cloud during the afternoon, with the risk of a few showers.. The evening & night are expected to become largely dry & clear. Still feeling cool by day & especially cold for the time of year overnight.
Max.Temp. 14      Wind NW2       Overnight Min. Temp.  3  ( possibly a slight ground frost in the most prone localities)

SUNDAY & MONDAY---Both should be dry days, with broken cloud & sunshine at times. Both days will also have below average temperatures, with Monday perhaps feeling the colder, as E. winds freshen ( caused by a low pressure system  affecting southern parts of the U.K).

A reminder that, overall, daytime temperatures should average 18.8 during August. Nothing at those levels since LAST Saturday.  What a disappointing month it's turning out, though as usual, there will be those who disagree ( & don't forget. rainfall is currently at 157% of average!!)

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

Well, the cool weather continues & taken alongside the rainfall total already this month, I would think that August will turn out to be the poorest of the 3 summer months this year  (June/July/August). Of course, I know only too well, that one man's "good" month can be another man's poor month!! (The number of times my cordial greeting to a local of "miserable morning" or "nippy this morning" has more often than not been "contested"!! Enough said.
It should remain mainly dry today, though there may well be the odd shower behind Ben Vrackie, over the Cairngorms. It will be partly cloudy, but there should at least be some spells of sunshine, The breeze from the NW will feel cool ( to most of us!).
Max. Temp.15 (3.5 degrees down from normal)    Wind NW3      Overnight low 5 (though varying considerably between locations).

WEDNESDAY---Mainly dry, broken cloud, remaining cool for time of year. An approaching front may give more cloud & a little rain by evening.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

Our weather is still being influenced by a deep low pressure system over Scandinavia (Any readers with friends or relatives travelling to or from Scandinavia by sea at present, are likely taking a bit of a pounding!)
Things should be considerably better in Pitlochry (certainly as compares with Sunday), as skies remain more broken, amounts of sunshine increase & any showers become more isolated. Not, however, a day for picnics, as the fresh NW wind will continue, accentuating the below-average temperatures.

Max. Temp.15 (should be 18.5)      Wind-- NW3 or 4 (perhaps occasional gusts to 6 in exposed spots).    Tonight, with some clear skies, temperatures down to around 6

OUTLOOK (TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY)---Mainly dry, with broken cloud & some sunshine, but remaining cool both by day & night. It may well be pleasant behind glass or even in a garden with walls affording good shelter from the NW winds.  Temperatures no better than 15 as a high & possibly as low as 4 or 5 overnight, especially in  valley bottom locations.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

Not the best of Sundays!  In essence, it is expected to be rather cloudy at times & both cool & windy. There will also be showery outbreaks of rain around the area, perhaps more so to the north & west of Pitlochry. Much of any rain will tend to be on the light side, though later in the afternoon, showers could become more potent, though,as always, some spots will miss the worst.
Max.Temp. 16 ( average is more like 18.5),    Winds will be W to NW force 4 as an average, but with gusts in exposed spots up to force 6.  Overnight should be mainly dry, though lowest temperatures may be down to single figures (much more of a rarity last month).

OUTLOOK--MONDAY & TUESDAY

Mainly dry, though isolated showers possible. There should be cloud breaks & some sunny intervals. However, don't get too excited, as winds will remain in the NW, with daytime temperatures some 4 degrees below the normal for time of year. Nights will tend to feel chilly too, as temperatures fall into single figures---time to put on a little heating & perhaps close those windows which were essential  to keep open, during the many warm, humid nights in July.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY

A ridge of high pressure is now building from the SW & this should kill off the showery activity that affected some places, not far away, yesterday.  So today should be dry, with broken cloud & some spells of sunshine.
However, temperatures are expected to be a degree or so below the seasonal norm.

SATURDAY---Rather cloudy, though any rainfall should be only light & occasional (more expected further W ).
It is expected to stay rather on the cool side, with the SW wind becoming fresh, with gusts to force 6 in exposed places,
