SPECIAL NOTICE

There will be no further updates for a few days.

It is recommended that readers use some of the many links to obtain data & local, regional & national forecasts.

Several other weather websites in the region are also there to view.

When this Blog resumes, there will be a summary of September's weather, as well as Pitlochry data twice daily. There will also be occasional articles, as well as photographs with a landscape & weather bias from local & Scottish sources.

Nowadays, there is a plethora of private companies online, providing weather forecasts, some specifically for Pitlochry, though based on data not actually obtained from this locality. This blog (a website that retains all its published material for later viewing ), is the only source of meteorological data, coming from Pitlochry, taken under Met Office Climate Station conditions, that is readily available to the public.

Yes---the professionals have been somewhat over-optimistic for our neck of the woods.   See details below.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
A few parts of the wider region are already into sunshine, but as for Pitlochry, there's still a bit of waiting to do before we see the blue skies & sunshine. Already rather warm  out there, however, at close on 15.   Should reach 21 in afternoon sunshine.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Dry, some sunshine & a very mild night, staying well into double figures.

OUTLOOK
THURSDAY----Disappointing, with more cloud from a front & even a little rain possible during the afternoon. Still feeling rather warm & muggy.
FRIDAY----Hopefully, warm with some sunny spells
SATURDAY----Going downhill with a spell of rain
SUNDAY----Cooler & generally returning to a more unsettled regime in the week ahead.
So its a pretty quick "Hello & Goodbye" to a late taste of summer!

MONDAY 26th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1915Hrs
A very reasonable day, with broken cloud & some sunshine. Pitlochry appears to have caught an isolated shower around 1500Hrs. I was between Perth & Dundee & it stayed dry, with a fair amount of sunshine ( the price we pay at times for living amongst the hills & mountains!)  Highest temperature, 14.9.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Well broken cloud this evening & for the first part of the night, then becoming cloudy, with some light & patchy rain or drizzle. Temperatures falling while it's clear but rising with the cloud towards dawn. Minimum 7.

OUTLOOK
TUESDAY----An east/west split across the county, with Pitlochry on the boundary likely to be partly cloudy, with fairly small amounts of rain, a few drier & brighter slots. Further west, more cloud & more rain---further east, less cloud, more sunshine & very little in the way of rain. Pitlochry should reach around 17, so up on today.
WEDNESDAY----Warmest day for weeks!!  Maximum around 22.

MONDAY 26th SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0830Hrs
Looks like a spell of warm settled weather on the horizon for the whole of the U.K.  This is courtesy of an area of high pressure over Europe, feeding warm, Mediterranean/ N.African air in our direction. Probably Wednesday to Saturday the best days for it.    Today promising too, but not particularly warm & tomorrow a bit more changeable.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
An outside chance of a shower this morning, but otherwise, a dry day in prospect with well broken cloud & spells of sunshine.Highest temperature 15 or 16.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A fine evening followed by a dry night, though there may be more cloud & a little rain by morning. Mild overnight, with a low of 9.

OUTLOOK
TUESDAY----A west/ east split, with Pitlochry in the middle. Probably rather cloudy here with a little rain on occasions, though some brighter, drier spells too. More rain further west & the brightest, driest conditions towards the East coast. Mild at 16.
WEDNESDAY ONWARDS----The best weather of September! Temperatures up to 21 to 23

SATURDAY 24th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1700Hrs
Quite a pleasant day, with well-broken cloud & some spells of sunshine. A pity there were a couple of nuisance- value showers mid/late afternoon when I was mowing the lawn! The highest temperature reached 17.1 which is good for late September, but the coast appears to have had more sunshine & higher temperatures.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Perhaps another light shower in the next hour or so, but otherwise dry with breaks in the cloud. Fairly mild overnight, with a low of about 8.

OUTLOOK
SUNDAY----The morning will be the best part of the day, with some sunshine around. During the afternoon, cloud will increase from the south west, with rain arriving by or before evening. It is then likely to be wet, with moderate or heavy rain, though becoming drier as the night goes on. Windy.
MONDAY----Any rain left over should soon give way to a mainly dry day, with broken cloud & sunny intervals. Still on the breezy side.

SATURDAY 24th SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
It should be mainly dry for the next 3 days, though Sunday night is likely to be wet. For those travelling to the south of England, you may well get towards 80F during next week.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
A mainly dry day, with broken cloud & sunny periods. Moderate S to SW breezes & top temperature around 16.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Mainly dry, with broken cloud & in a mild airstream, temperatures no lower than about 9.

OUTLOOK
SUNDAY----Broken cloud with some sunshine. Cloud tending to increase later in the afternoon, bringing rain during the evening & into the night. A rather warm day at 16.
MONDAY---Following overnight rain, most of the day will be dry with broken cloud & some sunshine.

The midnight sun

FRIDAY 23rd SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1700Hrs
There was even less rain than forecast for this morning, while lunchtime & early afternoon gave a delightful interlude of broken cloud & sunny spells in which temperatures rocketed. The rest of the afternoon returned to a cloud sheet. Top temperature was a rather warm 17.5.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
There is likely to be some rain overnight, with winds likely to pick up from the south. The rain should be clear by morning. Minimum temperature around 9 degrees.

OUTLOOK
SATURDAY----It should be a pleasant Saturday, with broken cloud & some sunshine. It will be a bit on the breezy side, but temperatures should top 16.
SUNDAY----Still some dry & bright weather around, though rather windy. Temperatures similar to Saturday. Conditions will deteriorate by night-time with strong winds & a spell of heavy rain ,as active fronts affect the area from the south west.

FRIDAY 23rd SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Reasonable at present, with a dry patch in the warm front rain belt.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
A mostly cloudy day, with occasional, mainly light rain, especially during the morning. The afternoon should just about be dry, but any sunshine is likely to be somewhat limited. Light to moderate SW winds, highest temperature around 14 or 15.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Rather cloudy, with some rain during the night. Mild & breezy, lowest temperature 10.

OUTLOOK
SATURDAY----The better day of the weekend. Mainly dry, broken cloud, some sunshine & a high of 15 or 16--breezy.

THURSDAY 22nd SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1800Hrs
The showers stayed mainly in the west, but we were rather cloudy for much of the time. The top temperature was a below-normal 13.0.   Had a red squirrel on my bird table earlier this evening!

 THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Mainly dry & bright this evening, with only the slight chance of a light shower. Overnight, it is likely to become more cloudy, but only small amounts of rain are expected, most of it having fallen over the high ground to the west.  It will be a mild night & somewhat breezier later on.  Minimum temperature 9,

OUTLOOK
FRIDAY----Generally cloudy, but any rain is likely to be light & patchy. It will be breezy from the south, but a little milder than today. Highest temperature around 15.
SATURDAY----Perhaps an overhang of rain to start Saturday, but broken cloud & some sunny intervals later. SUNDAY looks reasonable at present.

THURSDAY 22nd SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Rather autumnal out there, with a nip in the air. This morning's rainfall radar shows dozens of showers out west & plenty of clear sky on the eastern side.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
Lots of showers in the west & none near the east coast at present. Pitlochry is in the "border zone", so probably one or two showers, these mostly fairly light. Partly cloudy, with some sunny intervals at times, with more sunshine nearer to the East coast. A classic day for places like Perth & Dundee being 2 degrees warmer than Pitlochry (altitude + sunshine amounts ), so about 14 here & 16 in Perth & Dundee. Winds W to SW, mainly moderate, occasionally fresh.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
The period should be dry to start with & there should be cloud breaks. Later on, it will become mainly cloudy, with a little patchy light rain. Temperatures holding up at 8.

OUTLOOK
FRIDAY----Cloudy & wet in the west. Mostly cloudy with a few patches of lightish rain around Pitlochry. Mostly dry near the East coast, with a few breaks in the cloud.
SATURDAY----Perhaps a little rain to start with on Saturday, then some dry periods, with sunny intervals & a touch milder.

Cloudy skies, with light to moderate rain at 0830Hrs. The afternoon should prove better than the morning!

Shallow bands of sea fog are a nuisance in these waters & we were lucky to have so little.

TUESDAY 20th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1730Hrs
Another "mixed" day, with cloudy spells, sunny intervals & showers represented at some time or other. The showers were mainly from 1400Hrs onwards, but were more of nuisance value. Once again, temperatures peaked at around the 15 mark for the 4th day on the trot.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
There is still a chance of a light shower in the next hour or so, but after that, it should become dry with broken cloud. Minimum temperature not as low as last night, more like 8 or 9, with increasing cloud & wind by dawn.

OUTLOOK
WEDNESDAY-----Mainly cloudy & windy to start the day, with rain soon arriving from the west. A marked improvement expected by early/mid afternoon, with broken cloud & some sunshine, perhaps some showers later in the evening & overnight.Top temperature about 14.
THURSDAY----Much of the day should be dry with some sunshine. There may be rather more cloud around both early & late, perhaps with a shower or two .Highest temperature around 14 or 15.

TUESDAY 20th SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0815Hrs
A little colder overnight than expected, giving the first ground frost of September at this site. At 0700Hrs, there was plenty of clear sky around, but by 0815hrs, clouds were beginning to increase from the west, threatening some showers within the not-too-distant future.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
After a dry start, with some early sunshine, cloud will tend to build to give a few, mainly light showers. There will still be some sunny intervals around, with dry spells.Winds will be moderate W to SW, with highest temperatures around 15.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Any remaining showers should die out & much of the night will see partly cloudy skies, but also some clear spells. Cloud is likely to increase later in the night. Minimum temperatures 8.

OUTLOOK
WEDNESDAY----A cloudy morning, with rain spreading from the west. During the afternoon, rain will clear & skies break to give some sunshine. Breezy, with top temperatures around 14.
THURSDAY----Broken cloud, some sunshine & a few showers.

Looking back at the steep cliffs of North Cape, the globe being just visible on the top.

MONDAY 19th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1715Hrs
Very much a mixed day, with an emphasis on cloudy periods, but with a few breaks with some sunshine. There were 2 patches of light rain & drizzle. Highest temperature reached 15.3.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Dry, with some bright intervals for a time, but there is a rain area to the west, which is most likely to affect places to the south of us. However, some of its northern edge, with mostly light rain, could just clip us for a while later this evening. Thereafter, it should be dry with some clear spells. Minimum temperature around 7 or 8.

OUTLOOK
TUESDAY----It should be a bright & breezy day & dry for much of the time. The odd passing shower might just affect us, especially during the afternoon. Highest temperature about 15
WEDNESDAY----Often cloudy & rather breezy, with only a little sunshine expected. There will also be some showers or even a longer spell of rain. Cool at 13 maximum.

MONDAY 19th SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
It looked a great morning at 0745, with blue skies & some pretty mist bands. Now cloud has spread in quickly, with a little rain to come later. Glasgow was the U.K's warmest place yesterday at 19---makes a change!

PITLOCHRY TODAY
Following a chilly start, with some attractive mist patches early on, blue skies & sunshine are going to give way to increasing amounts of cloud from the west. Some rain will follow later, but this should be light & patchy & not add up to much. Highest temperatures 14 or 15.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Perhaps a short spell of heavier rain, after which a dry night should follow, with a few cloud breaks Minimum temperature 8 or 9.

OUTLOOK
TUESDAY----Mostly dry (small chance of a shower ), with broken cloud & some sunshine. Top temperature around 15.
WEDNESDAY----Rather more cloud around, with a greater chance of showers or even a longer spell of rain.

Looking over Honningsvag, the largest fishing port in Norway, which plays host to many British trawlers. At this latitude, the sun remains above the horizon from 15th May to 31st July. The weather, however, is notoriously unpredictable & rain, fog & cloud are all possible weather conditions. The sunless polar night lasts from 21st November to 23rd January.

SUNDAY 18th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1815Hrs
It's been a dry day, with broken cloud & some sunshine.  At times, some showers were very close by to the E & NE. The highest temperature was 15.1.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
An evening of broken cloud & a night of clear spells will lead to falling temperatures, with a minimum of around 4 or 5. On the ground, some prone spots may be close to zero. There is likely to be a heavy dew & some valley mist patches.

OUTLOOK
MONDAY---It should be a dry, sunny but chilly start. Very weak fronts will be approaching Scotland from the Atlantic, but Pitlochry should only see something of an increase in cloud during late morning & any rain that struggles through later in the day, is only likely to be very light & patchy, with very small totals. The top temperature will be around 14 or 15.
TUESDAY----Dry for much of the day, with some sunshine & a small shower risk. Maximum temperature 14 or 15.

SUNDAY 18th SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0830Hrs
A reasonable day ahead & probably the next 2 as well! September rain is now above the normal month's figure.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
Much of today should be dry (most of the showers being further to the north & east ). There should be broken cloud, with some spells of sunshine. An isloated shower cannot totally be ruled out.. Winds will blow mainly from the N. & maximum temperatures will reach around 15 or 16.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Mainly dry, with some evening sunshine & a largely clear night. Becoming chilly by dawn, with minimum temperatures down to about 4 or 5.

OUTLOOK
MONDAY---A dry start to the new working week & it should be mostly sunny, at least for part of the morning, but gradually become more cloudy thereafter. Very little in the way of rain is expected, just a few spits & spots or patches of drizzle later in the day.Highest temperatures around 15.
TUESDAY----Dry for much of the time, with patchy cloud & sunny spells. Just the chance of a shower.

Yours truly at the"top" of Europe--North Cape (at 71 10 N & 307m above the Arctic Ocean ).It's obviously cool, but at least fairly clear. Some travellers reach this point, only to find the place shrouded in thick mist, so we are lucky with the weather.

Why can't we have a few more days like yesterday?   A couple of hours dry, then it's downhill. Probably quite a lot of rain to come before the day is out!

PITLOCHRY TODAY
Cloudy throughout. It should be dry for a while, but by mid to late morning, some rain should be starting to affect the area. Winds picking up a bit from the S.E. & maximum temperature about 14.

We've docked at Honningsvag ( pop. 4,600, Lat. 71N ) & are en route for North Cape--the "top" of Europe. The only time I've seen reindeer in the wild before, was climbing from the Lairig Ghru to Braeriach.

THURSDAY 15th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

The rainfall radar screens are blank; no rain anywhere in the British Isles. Unfortunately, no repeat of that situation during the next couple of days.  Today's highest temperature was 16.0.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Some sunshine this evening & some clear spells tonight, though there will probably be more cloud around later in the night.Lowest temperature around 7 or 8.

OUTLOOK
FRIDAY----A dry start seems likely, though skies will be rather cloudy. By lunchtime, outbreaks of rain are likely to spread in from the south west, though the rain should be intermittent to start with, with still a few dry intervals. The rain may become heavier & more continuous later. Maximum temperature 13 or 14.
SATURDAY----Low pressure close by, so rather unsettled. Some rain early, followed by some cloud breaks, sunny intervals & a few showers.Max.temp.14
SUNDAY----Low pressure to the east, winds from the north. A few showers likely, but also some sunny spells, with temperatures around 14. A chilly night likely.

THURSDAY 15th SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
It was nippy last night, down to zero on the grass. A ridge of high pressure covers the British Isles, but it doesn't intend to stay!

PITLOCHRY TODAY
It will be a dry day, with broken cloud & spells of sunshine. The afternoon may see rather more in the way of cloud, though still bright with sunny intervals. Winds will be light & highest temperatures will reach 15 or 16 degrees---near normal.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
There will be sunny intervals during the evening & some clear intervals overnight, though perhaps rather more in the way of cloud later. Lowest temperature around 7.

OUTLOOK
FRIDAY---It will be mainly cloudy throughout. The morning should stay mainly dry, but during the afternoon & evening, some occasional & mainly light rain will spread from the west.
SATURDAY & SUNDAY---Rather unsettled with some showers or longer spells of rain, with a centre of low pressure close at hand.

The midnight sun dips, but stays well above the horizon. We're close to latitude 70N.

WEDNESDAY 14th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1745Hrs
A pleasant day, with some sunny spells, though on the windy side. At least good for a walk or doing those jobs in the garden. Tomorrow looks promising too, though there will be a nippy start following overnight clear skies. Not as windy. Today's highest temperature was 14.7.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Just the chance of a passing light shower around 1830 ish, otherwise dry & becoming clear during the night, with winds dying down.Clear skies & light winds on an Autumn night spell cold by dawn. Minimum temperature around 4, possibly 0 or slightly lower on the ground in some flat, frost-prone spots.

OUTLOOK
THURSDAY----Dry with broken cloud & some sunny spells following a chilly start. Plenty of dew on the lawns. Highest temperature 15 or 16 degrees, which is close to normal.
FRIDAY----Rain spreading from the west, as several fronts, linked to low pressure, pass over Scotland
At present, Sunday looks the better day of the weekend, but more detail nearer the time.

WEDNESDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Nice to see some sunshine to start the day, for a change. Reasonable prospects for the next 48hrs!

PITLOCHRY TODAY
It should be dry for most , if not all of the time. Cloud will come & go, but perhaps there may be rather more about this afternoon. Highest temperatures will reach around 14 & winds will be moderate to fresh from W to NW.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
It should be mainly dry. Cloud will tend to break during late evening & overnight giving some clear skies. It will probably be the coldest night of September to date, minimum air temperature 4 or 5 & perhaps a touch of ground frost.

OUTLOOK
THURSDAY----A chilly start, bu ta fine dry day, with some spells of sunshine. Cloud should remain well-broken. Highest temperature around 14 or 15. (Best day for mowing the lawn !)
FRIDAY----All change, with rain spreading from the west

Into the wee small hours, snow on the mountains---getting near to the "top" of Norway.

TUESDAY 13th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1700Hrs
The rain has carried on relentlessly in much of Western Scotland; very little has made it this far east, just 1.2mms having fallen since 0830Hrs. The highest temperature has been a rather below average 14.1.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A little more rain likely on occasions during the early part of the evening, but this should eventually die out, leaving a dry night with a few clear spells, lowest temperature around 7 or 8.

OUTLOOK
WEDNESDAY----It may start bright & dry, but there is a possibility that a rain area to the north could just  affect Pitlochry for a time. This forecast will need firming up in the morning. Further south should see a dry, bright day.
THURSDAY----Promises to be the best day of the week, dry with broken cloud & some sunny intervals, though temperatures no better than normal for mid-September.

TUESDAY 13th SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0830Hrs
Most of the "action" appeared to be further south yesterday.  There were some very heavy rainfall totals further west eg Tyndrum had 117.6mms in the past 48hrs up till 2100Hrs last night (more than twice as much as Pitlochry's had so far this month ).

PITLOCHRY TODAY
Generally cloudy & the rain in the west of our region, is occasionally likely to penetrate as far as Pitlochry, though should stay fairly light, with some dry spells too. It will still be breezy & highest temperatures should reach around 14 or 15.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Becoming dry with some clear spells developing. Lowest temperature around 7 or 8.

OUTLOOK
WEDNESDAY----Broken cloud, with some intervals of sunshine & lighter winds. There may occasionally be more cloudy patches, with perhaps the odd light shower, but the emphasis is on dry weather. Highest temperatures around 15.
THURSDAY----Light winds, variable amounts of cloud with some sunshine at times. Temperatures up to 15 or 16.

Cruising is at its most fascinating when you are near to a rugged coastline, with mountainous off-shore islands. Post-midnight daylight is an added bonus.

MONDAY 12th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1800Hrs
Pitlochry appears to have got off lightly as far as the predicted high winds are concerned. I've had a look at the 1700Hrs reports of wind gusts from a number of Scottish stations, but my impression is that things could have been a lot worse. Anyway, best check the Scottish evening news to check what disruption there might have been. Rainfall today was 4.3mms, while the highest temperature was 14.5.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Windy throughout the night, with some veering of direction towards W or WNW. Still the likelihood of some more rain, but with time there should be more in the way of dry spells. Minimum temperature 9.

OUTLOOK
TUESDAY----Still windy, but some easing by afternoon. Most of tomorrow's rain will stay further west, with the chance of a few brighter spells here. Nevertheless, it will be rather cloudy at times & some showery rain may find its way across the mountains. Cool at about 14 or15.
WEDNESDAY----Some spells of broken cloud & a few sunny intervals, with less wind, but there could well be some cloudy patches producing a shower or two.

MONDAY 12th SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Peaceful at present, but again, pretty miserable, with overcast skies & drizzle. The wind is set to be at its strongest  around late afternoon to mid-evening, but indications are that conditions will be more severe in & south of the Central Belt. Neverthe less, it may well be worth "battening down the hatches " (I've taken in the garden table & chairs----not that they've been used this summer!! )

PITLOCHRY TODAY
It will remain cloudy all day, with rain from time to time. Much of the rain locally will be fairly light & there may be the odd drier spell, though a few moderate outbreaks can't be ruled out. There will be considerably higher rainfall totals in the far west of our region.  The wind will only be light to moderate at first., but during the afternoon, it will veer into the SW & strengthen, becoming near to gale force during the early- mid evening period. Those venturing further south, including Perth & Dundee, may find conditions a little more severe & potentially disruptive.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Remaining cloudy, with some further rain at times (much worse further west ) & very windy all night. Lowest temperature 9.

OUTLOOK
TUESDAY----Staying mostly cloudy, with some rain on occasions, perhaps more so later in the day. Rainfall amounts further west will give some very high totals. It will remain windy. Highest temperature 14 or 15.
WEDNESDAY----Broken cloud, sunny intervals, less windy, perhaps a shower or two. Colder overnight.

Beauty & tranquility at midnight.

SUNDAY 11th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1745Hrs
Ex hurricane Katia will be west of Ireland by midnight tonight, with a central pressure of 959mbs. By noon tomorrow, she will be to the N.W. of Scotland & by midnight Tuesday, over Shetland.  The strongest winds will be found some distance to the south of the centre, where the isobars are most tightly packed. Most British Isles sea areas have gale severe gale or storm warnings. One or two N.W.sea areas can expect a spell of force 11 winds.  Over land, the strongest winds are expected over an area from Ft. William across to the Tay, south to Cumbria to the Tees, probably between late afternoon to mid-evening.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Remaining overcast, with rain at times, mainly light & patchy, though possibly moderate at times early evening. Overnight, the rain will become heavier. It will be mild & winds from the south will become fresh. Minimum temperature 11.

MONDAY----Cloudy throughout, with rain at times, though far less than further west. There may be times when the rain is light & patchy. Winds will increase to give gales or severe gales later in the day, but there is every chance, that the highest gusts will occur further south. Best temperature about 14.
TUESDAY----Still windy, but skies should be more broken with some sunny intervals, though also some more cloudy, showery spells too. Feeling cool at 13.

SUNDAY 11th SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Very disturbed weather charts this morning, with already a deep low to the west of Scotland & Katia  in Mid Atlantic ""nursing her wrath to keep it warm " ready for later tomorrow.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
A cloudy day throughout, with spells of rain reaching Pitlochry during the morning. Much of the rain is expected to be light, but there will be some moderate outbreaks. There may be a few drier intervals. It will be breezy from the south & it won't feel just as mild as it did yesterday, with maximum temperatures around 15.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Remaining cloudy, though with any rain becoming light & patchy. It may become dry for a time. During the night, a heavier band of rain will affect the area.

OUTLOOK
MONDAY---It will continue cloudy & windy with rain at times, occasionally heavy. All this c/o ex hurricane Katia, which. not unusually at this time of year, has entered the flow of westerlies. Winds are expected to be particularly strong in the late afternoon/ early evening period, but staying windy all night in any event. Temperatures, somewhat academic in these conditions, up to about 16.
TUESDAY---Still windy, with broken cloud, sunny intervals & showers.

A tranquil late evening, sailing between the Norwegian Mainland & the spectacular off-shore islands. It will stay light all night, in fact we are lined up for 5 days of perpetual daylight.

SATURDAY 10th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1700Hrs
A most unfortunate day weather-wise for the Highland Games.  Rainfall between 0900 & 1700hrs totalled 9.6mms (much of that before 1300hrs). Though rain during the afternoon was less heavy or persistent, it failed to die out completely until after 1500, while cloud breaks failed to appear until an hour or so after that.   By 1700hrs, there were several blue patches to be seen, though the breeze had sprung up somewhat. At least it was warm for the time of year, with the maximum up to 18.1.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
The evening & night promise to be mainly dry, with some breaks in the cloud. The lowest temperature is likely to be a very mild 12.

OUTLOOK
SUNDAY----A bright start, but cloud thickening from the south west, followed by spells of rain during the afternoon & evening & probably more rain overnight. It will be windier than today & not as warm, maximum near 15.
MONDAY----Overnight rain may linger into the morning, before broken cloud, sunny intervals & showers take over. It is likely to be VERY WINDY, ex-hurricane Katia having entered the S.W. flow across the Atlantic.

SATURDAY 10th SEPTEMBER

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
A warm front has brought a spell of rain during the night, but also introduced some very mild temperatures.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
The morning will be mostly cloudy, with some further rain on occasions. It will, however, feel very mild, with temperatures already around 15 degrees. During the afternoon, there may be some brightness or even a little sunshine, but it will still be rather cloudy at times & the occasional shower can't be ruled out. In any sunshine, the temperature could rise as high as 19, which is well above the early September average.   So for the HIGHLAND GAMES, it's a case of perhaps a brolly needed, but not warm jumpers!    UPDATE @ 1315Hrs----Remaining mostly cloudy, with little prospect of sunshine. There is likely to be some patchy light rain on occasions, though not amounting to much. Feeling rather warm at around 17 or 18.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Mainly dry with a few sunny intervals, followed by some cloud breaks overnight. Staying mild.

OUTLOOK
SUNDAY----A dry start to the day, perhaps with early brightness, but more cloud, with showers or longer spells of rain are lined up for the afternoon & evening.Breezy.
MONDAY--- VERY WINDY--KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THE FORECASTS!

A close- up of Svartisen Glacier's snout, clearly shows that its area is reducing & that in the recent past, it would have covered the land to its left, which has clearly been ice-eroded.This glacier, like so many on the planet, is becoming a victim of Global Warming. Doubters about what is happening to our climate, should realize that there was never an expectation that there would never be any cold months (like last December)nor that every year would be warmer than the one before. Global warming is a slow process, with fluctuations & temporary reversals.

FRIDAY 9th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1845Hrs
A very poor day after yesterday, with persistent rain & drizzle this morning & though a drier afternoon, the cloud failed to break. Temperatures are at their highest now (13.1 & rising).  At 1400 Hrs, Pitlochry was on 12.7, places on the Northumberland coast were at a pleasant 20, while Bridlington on the Yorkshire coast was up at 22, getting a dose of tropical air, behind a warm front.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Mostly dry this evening, but generally cloudy. There will be a further spell of rain overnight, with temperatures remaining in double figures.

SATURDAY
There may still be some rain left over from the northward moving warm front first thing in the morning. It should, however, feel very mild & cloud is likely to break at times during the morning to give some sunny intervals. During the afternoon, there may be more cloudy spells with a few showers around. Temperatures should reach a warm 19 in an air mass that has originated much further south.   UPDATE at 0900HRS

FRIDAY 9th SEPTEMBER

0845Hrs

PITLOCHRY TODAY
Overcast, with mainly very light & patchy rain or drizzle. This should die out during the afternoon, with perhaps some lifting & breaking of the cloud. It will begin to feel rather mild & muggy & in any afternoon brightness or sunny intervals, it may feel warm, with temperatures possibly up to 18.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Dry to start with, but further rain during the night. Very mild, with temperatures no lower than 12.

OUTLOOK
SATURDAY (PITLOCHRY HIGHLAND GAMES )----Overall, a somewhat unsettled picture, with a deep low pressure system to the west of Ireland.  Rather cloudy at times & the morning may start off with an overspill of some of the overnight rain. As the morning goes on, there should be some limited intervals of sunshine, but a cold front is due through the area during the afternoon & this is likely to see a more cloudy spell, with showers for a time. Despite this, it should feel rather warm, with temperatures reaching 18. Winds will be fresh southerly.

A first glimpse of the Svartisen Glacier at latitude 66 43. This is Norway's 2nd largest glacier. The name "Svartisen"means "black ice" This glacier stands today as a living museum to the Ice Age & it is worth reflecting how the edge of the ice cap must have looked when 18,000 years ago it covered over half of the British Isles.

THURSDAY 8th SEPTEMBER----EVENING

HEADLINES @ 1930Hrs
It's been a pleasant day, with a reasonable amount of sunshine. The maximum temperature reached 17.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Cloud has filled in somewhat, at high & medium levels, heralding the approach of  a couple of warm fronts. These will bring mainly patchy & light rain to our area later on in the night. Mild, with temperatures staying close to 9 or 10.

OUTLOOK
FRIDAY----The morning is likely to remain generally overcast, with a low cloud base & some rain at times. It is likely to become rather warm & humid & as cloud begins to lift & break to give some afternoon brightness, any sunshine could lift temperatures towards 18 or 19 as a maximum.
SATURDAY----Weather charts for Saturday, show a deep depression to the west of Ireland, with fresh S to SW winds ciculating round it. One or two fronts are scheduled to pass through, keeping conditions rather changeable.  So for the HIGHLAND GAMES, it is likely to be partly cloudy with some sunny intervals, but also a chance of a shower or two. Winds will be around force 4 or 5 from the S or SW & temperatures will peak at around 18 or 19, which is warm for early September.
