SUMMARY FOR MAY 2014
The month was rather warm & very dry.
The average maximum temperature 15.5 was the warmest since 2008, though there were no sustained spells of hot weather & the highest temperature was only 19.8 (16th). However, daytime temperature averages were helped by the lack of any cold spells, with the coolest day reaching 9.2.
Overnight averages were particularly high at 7.0, with only 1 night at this site being very slightly below zero. I can find no years in the area, when May nights were as mild in the last 40 years or so.
Rainfall, at 30.1mms, was only 49% of the long-term average & we have to go back to May 2008 to find one fractionally drier.
In contrast to many parts of Scotland, the S & SE of England had a largely unsettled May, with above average rainfall.
