THIS MORNING'S SNOW HAS BEEN SHOWERY IN NATURE, COMING IN OFF THE NORTH SEA ON A FRESH SE WIND.  ( THE SNOW FURTHER SOUTH OVER PARTS OF ENGLAND & WALES, IS LINKED TO AN ATLANTIC FRONT MOVING NE-WARDS & GRADUALLY LOSING INTENSITY.

AT 12 NOON, THE AIR TEMPERATURE WAS 0.0 & IS UNLIKELY TO RISE ABOVE +1.

RADAR FORECASTS SUGGEST THAT THE REMAINDER OF TODAY & TONIGHT, AS WELL AS MUCH OF SATURDAY, WILL CONTINUE IN SIMILAR VEIN---SNOW SHOWERS FROM TIME TO TIME, WITH SOME DRY, BRIGHTER SPELLS IN BETWEEN, WITH WINDS FROM THE E. OR SE.

SNOW ACCUMULATIONS AT TOWN LEVEL ARE LIKELY TO BE NO MORE THAN A FEW CMS. THOUGH WITH INCREASE IN HEIGHT, SNOWFALL WILL BE GREATER, WITH BLOWING SNOW AN ADDED FEATURE. CONDITIONS ARE LIKELY TO BE MORE SEVERE  TO E. & NE OF PITLOCHRY.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY----It will a very cold & mainly  cloudy day, with a fresh SE wind.  There will be some dry, brighter intervals, but also some mainly light snow on occasions, especially during the afternoon & evening. There are likely to be an additional 3 to 5 cms lying here by Sat. morning, but more on the hills to the E. & NE where drifting is likely. Occasional snow is also expected overnight, sometimes moderate in intensity.

WEEKEND   Remaining mostly cloudy & very cold with a biting E.wind.  Once again, there are likely to be further outbreaks of snow, mostly light, though occasionally moderate.There should also be some dry spells. Areas to the E. & NE of Pitlochry are likely to have the largest accumulations of snow & some drifting.   So by Monday morning---still very cold, with a few cms of snow still lying in & around Pitlochry

The day will start cloudy, though temperatures are higher than yesterday as cloud has acted as a blanket overnight..As winds pick up in strength during the day, this will give a wind-chill factor & it will feel bitingly cold, with best temperatures close to freezing. There may be some brighter skies this afternoon, with perhaps a little sunshine. AFTER DARK, there will be a mix of more cloudy periods but also some clear spells, so a slight to moderate frost by dawn.

FRIDAY---A rather more problematic day, as a fresh to strong E wind, together with an Atlantic front, combine to increase the risk of some snow, especially p.m.  At present, however, it seems that much of any snow will tend to be fairly light & occasional. Still bitingly cold, with a fresh to strong E to SE wind & temperatures struggling to better zero.


SATURDAY---Still very cold & mainly overcast, with a fresh E to SE wind. There are likely to be further spells of mainly light snow.

A slight snow flurry earlier, but at least the cloud cover has kept overnight temperatures higher than expected.

The day should be dry, with broken cloud & some sunny intervals. It will, however, remain cold, with the thermometer spending much of the day between -1 & +1. At least winds will be very light, so no wind chill factor.

WEDNESDAY  Very frosty at first, perhaps with some valley mist patches. Most places should see a fair amount of sunshine, but temperatures will struggle to reach zero through the day, with more severe frost overnight.



THURSDAY   Very frosty again & remaining very cold all day. It should stay dry, with some sunny intervals. More of a wind chill as winds increase from the SE.

The temperature at 1400hrs. today was +0.5 degrees.

Love or hate this sort of weather, most people appreciate the beauty of snow clinging to the vegetation, especially with blue skies & sunshine.

As for records---there was one day in January 1982 when the thermometer peaked at just-10.9, with a night minimum of  -19.6.  These will certainly take some beating!
