JULY 2013 (1st to 28th only) SUMMARY

The month is all set to become the warmest July since 2006, with the mean maximum temperature about 3 degrees up on the long-term average for the month & the mean minimum up by about 2 degrees. (It is assumed that the few days left until the month's end, will be closer to normal on temperature, with minor variations to final figures)  No records were actually broken, with the 30.0 degrees in 1983 & the 1.5 in 2004, remaining unchallenged. Nevertheless, with 17 days above 70F (21C), many will remember this July as a decent summer month, which we were badly in need of.

Up until the 22nd, the month was proving very dry, with gardeners & growers needing to water plants frequently (only 10.7mms having fallen). However, all this changed from the 23rd, as some heavy bursts of rain, sometimes thundery, came along. Currently, it's looking as though, by the end of the month, we will be much nearer to the normal value than was the case by the 22nd.

Overall then, apart from a few unsettled days at the end of the month, a pretty good July.

However, its appearance is likely to be punctuated by more cloudy periods, with scattered showers, more than likely being heavy & thundery, particularly from mid-afternoon to mid-evening. Winds today will be rather slack & variable, with still a warm & humid feel to the day. Top temperatures should reach 20 or 21. TONIGHT should become dry & it will remain very mild once again.

TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
Dry for a time this morning, then some rain will begin to spread into our area from the south. There may be a few heavy outbreaks. This belt of more general rain should die out after a couple of hours to leave a day of dry spells with sunny intervals, but also a risk of a few scattered heavy showers, perhaps thundery. Winds will remain fairly light from the SE & highest temperatures should approach 20.   TONIGHT should be rather cloudy, perhaps with some further rain, but staying very mild yet again

The weather up to & including the weekend, is expected to remain rather warm by day & mild overnight, in a range 13 as an overnight low to 19 to 21 as a daytime maximum. Fairly light winds will blow from a direction between SW & SE.
The weather will tend to be unreliable, with skies partly cloudy & sunshine mostly rather limited. Showers, sometimes heavy & thundery, are also on the menu, but while some places in the region may experience some local flooding,  others may receive only small amounts of rain. Saturday may be the best day of the bunch.

It's always interesting to keep an eye on any heavy showers which seem to have Pitlochry's name on them. Check sources of information on the site's links!

Pressure is falling & there will be more emphasis on cloud & outbreaks of rain during the next day or two.
TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
Not easy to "spot-forecast" today. There is already some thundery activity as far north as the Berwickshire Coast. Much of the day will be cloudy, with sunny intervals at a premium. Scattered outbreaks of mainly light rain could occur this morning, though most of these will be further south than Pitlochry. More significant rain, perhaps heavy & thundery at times, is likely later in the day, possibly the greatest risk is during the evening.Amounts will vary from place to place, with localised flooding in some, but relatively little in others. It will still feel warm & humid during both day & night, with temperatures peaking around 20 or 21 & not falling below 15. Winds E to SE force 2 or 3.

Temperatures should be in a range 14 min. to 20 max. Winds will remain in an E.quadrant, mainly force 2 or 3, though with higher gusts in any heavy downpours.
The overall trend, before the end of the month, is for the weather to become cooler than of late & generally more unsettled.

Yesterday, Leuchars reached an impressive 28.9 degrees, though from today, is vulnerable to cooling breezes off the North Sea. High pressure is expected to remain to the North of Scotland for most of next week, leaving us dry & settled but prone to some misty low cloud especially overnight & in the early mornings, as well as continuing sunny spells & temperatures above normal. Western Scotland should be well-favoured in such a pressure pattern.

Dry, with long sunny periods. Becoming very warm, maximum temperature around 25. The wind will settle into the SE & this means its origins are from a  much cooler North Sea.  OVERNIGHT, misty low cloud will later spread in from the North Sea, perhaps hanging on for a while into tomorrow morning.

High pressure continues to dominate the weather over the whole of Britain. Today, however, will be the last day in this settled spell, when winds are in a W. quarter. From tomorrow, with high pressure over or to the north of us, winds will switch into an E. quarter. This will result in East Coast areas becoming cooler (perhaps with some haar), but more western areas becoming warmer & sunnier.
TODAY'S FORECAST FOR PITLOCHRY
The day should stay dry, with sunny spells. It will become very warm, with a maximum of 25 or 26 degrees & light to moderate W to NW winds.  TONIGHT should see clear spells, with minimum temp. rather lower than on many recent nights.

Pitlochry is also likely to find max. temps. gradually lowering from an initial 25 or higher,  back  towards 20. There is also a risk of some misty low cloud reaching us from the North Sea, particularly overnight & into the first part of the mornings. Nevertheless, there will still be some warm sunshine around.
Any significant rain seems unlikely for some time yet.

                                                             POOR FORECASTING

Some might be kind enough to suggest that there is no such thing as poor forecasting, just weather that has a mind of it's own!

Well today's been one such occasion & just as we were beginning to get the public on our side, with the lovely start to July this year & the promise of more to come + global warming back on the agenda!!!

Neither the Met Office nor the BBC proved of any help to "yours truly" this morning, as within a matter of minutes after observations were made, cloud thickened & lowered, with a blanket of mist soon covering the town Drizzle & light rain fell & later, surprise surprise, even an outbreak or two of heavier rain.

Consulting the rainfall radar chart provided by the Meteo Group Premium Line, I could see several patches of light rain moving from WSW to ENE, with Pitlochry more or less in the midst of it all.  No rain seemed to be reaching the East Coast, but it wasn't even supposed to be getting THIS far east!

By 1500hrs, there were still spots of rain here, with cloudy skies, though the temperature had managed to top 19.2. Meanwhile, Leuchars was reporting a temperature of 24.2 at 1400hrs & I suspect it had seen no rain & some decent sunny spells into the bargain.

So,  sorry to be a hopelessly wrong optimist on today's weather in Pitlochry, but glad that the weather is still capable of playing tricks & leaving even the professionals with egg on their faces..        Barry 1610hrs
