Not looking too promising to start off August! The overcast conditions at the Olympics today can be attributed to the warm front affecting southern parts. Up here, however, within a ridge of high pressure, it is set to be our best day of the week, so enjoy the sunshine. I'm planning on mowing the lawns, but at present they're soaking wet from a heavy dew following the 2nd coldest night in July. Wednesday is lined up to be our worst day of the week, as the frontal systems producing the cloud & rain move north, affecting us from later this evening & for much of Wednesday, giving overcast conditions with rain at times.
As for the rest of the week, the low seen on the chart is set to amble close by, encouraging showers, some heavy, to develop. As always in showery weather, some spots will receive much heavier rainfall amounts than others not too far away & in any event, there'll be some dry spells with sunny intervals around too.
Apart from today, temperatures are likely to fall a couple of degrees short of normal early August values.
Sorry to say, no hot, sunny, settled spells on the horizon just at present!

Wednesday still looks our best day of the week, with sunny spells & a high close to 20. Rather more cloud on Thursday & Friday, with occasional, mainly light rain. Temperatures in the 17 to 19 range. Saturday threatens to be more cloudy, showery & cooler.
A troublesome, slow moving front is wriggling around over S. Scotland, giving cloud & some rain. This affected us all day yesterday & may just move far enough north later in the day to cloud things up & bring some light rain perilously close. Meanwhile, parts of N. Scotland, as well as much of England & Wales, bask in warm sunshine & gin-clear skies. London may just hit 31. Pitlochry seems lined up for a day with some sunshine, but also some more cloudy patches. It should stay dry, but keep an eye on the sky to S & SE where some rain might just sneak up from, later in the afternoon. Winds SW2/3, max. temp.18.

An impressive welcome sign greets the visitor & local alike, whether they have come from lands afar or just been shopping in Morrisons at Berwick. Coldstream is very much a true Border Toon, where a mere stroll can quickly take you into England & back before breakfast.
Robert Burns crossed into England here, for the very first time, back in 1787. His enthusiasm in doing so would appear to have been much less than mine was, when at school in Derbyshire, back in 1961, I encountered his work "Tam O' Shanter in the syllabus for GCE "O" level English & enjoyed it so much-- still remembering chunks of it to this day.
An imposing monument to Charles Marjoribanks(M.P. for Berwickshire) is another prominent feature when crossing the Border & former Prime Minister, Sir Alec Douglas Home is buried in the town
Back in the C18th & C19th, it was, like Gretna, a popular destination for runaway lovers seeking marriage.
Apparently, pubs & hotels just on the English side of the border, became temporarily very popular with their Scottish neighbours when the smoking ban was introduced earlier to Scotland than England!

The Borders Railway, often referred to as the "Waverley Route" was in operation from 1849 to 1969 between Edinburgh & Carlisle. The photograph shows how well the former station at Melrose has been preserved, giving passing motorists a perfect reminder of a valued alternative mode of transport that once served the Borders.
Dr Beeching referred to the Waverley Route as the biggest money looser in the British railway system, but its closure left the region as, probably, the most rail-less part in the entire U.K. There were huge protests at & in advance of its closure, with placards proclaiming,"Waverley Line--born 1849, killed 1969"
But---all is not lost, as the Scottish Government intends to re-open the line between Edinburgh & Galashiels (with all the work & costs that will be incurred ) within the next few years.

English trees & bushes on the left & Scottish trees & bushes on the right, as a burn/beck/stream/brook marks the national boundary ( along a "B" road between Cornhill-on-Tweed & Kelso). Although the River Tweed serves as the Anglo/Scottish Border for a short distance, once it approaches the North Sea, the border swings north, leaving both Berwick-upon-Tweed on the river's northern bank & Tweedmouth on its southern, both in England. By Kelso, both sides of the Tweed are in Scotland. Only at Coldstream, does a crossing of the river take you between the two countries.

TIME & TIDE (& THE WEATHER!!) WAIT FOR NO MAN
Despite being nearly 2 hours after the latest advised safe crossing time, this driver seems determined to make it over to Holy Island.
Fortunately for him, it was a neap tide on this occasion! The tall structure, further along the causeway, is a place of refuge just in case the worst happens.

After a couple of good days to start the week, things look set to go downhill on Wednesday, as a slow-moving warm front takes up residence over Southern Scotland. Things should pick up again during the following 3 days, though it will sometimes be rather cloudy, with a mixture of some sunny intervals & a few showers. It will be cooler than earlier in the week, with daytime temperature 2 or 3 degrees below the mid-July norm.
