This sort of weather was in very short supply in June 2012. But while many places across Britain had the wettest June ever, with numerous instances of flooding, our area & more especially N.W. Scotland didn't fare anywhere near as badly. Detailed figures for Pitlochry should be available later tomorrow. (The photograph shows St. Andrews)

LOCAL AREA OUTLOOK----SUN. 1st to WED. 4th JULY
Nothing too exciting to start the new month! The period will be rather cloudy & cool, with a few showers or a longer spell of light rain lined up for each day of this period. A new area of low pressure, with its associated fronts will slowly move into Scotland from the Atlantic. Most of the rain or showers should be mostly light & winds should be no more than force 3 or 4. Temperatures will be down on normal, no better than about 16 as a daily maximum, with only limited amounts of sunshine. Nights should be mostly in double figures.

Low pressure to the west of Ireland will move across Scotland into Scandinavia, giving generally unsettled conditions. Friday will be unsettled with rain at times & little in the way of sunshine. Further occasional rain is likely, especially on Saturday, with a better chance of dry conditions & a few sunny intervals on Sunday. A new low pressure system seems set to continue the unsettled theme into next week. Daytime temperatures are likely to be pegged in the range 15 to 17 throughout.

THE NIGHTS ARE STARTING TO GET LONGER!!!
So says the pessimist, but it is factually correct. The summer solstice was on the 20th June this year.
However, the optimist can truthfully say that there will be more daylight than darkness until the 3rd week in September.
Click on GLOBAL DAYLIGHT MAP in FAVOURITE LINKS & check what goes on. I find it particularly interesting around 10pm, when part of Britain is in daylight & part in darkness. And remember, the places that get many weeks or months of perpetual daylight lose out on being very much colder than we are in Scotland (as we found last year on our journey to North Cape & Spitsbergen)
FORECAST ACCURACY
It takes about an hour each morning to complete PITLOCHRY DAILY WEATHER. About half this time is in researching different sources, mainly BBC, Met Office & Weather Online (all available via links on this site)
On the majority of days, there are some differences in detail between the souces of information.
This site picked up as early as last Sunday, that Thursday would be an unsettled day with rain (the forecast weather charts yet again looked particularly bad).
However, this morning, while BBC 5-day graphics showed moderate rain for almost every hour of the day & into Friday, their Pitlochry rainfall forecast radar map showed it dry until the afternoon on Thursday. Meanwhile the Met Office(Central, Tayside Fife) indicated a dry period between 3pm & 4 pm during the afternoon, with little getting from the south into our area during the morning.
Much of the evidence from radar forecast maps when PDW was being prepared around 0815 pointed to a mainly dry morning, which obviously turned out to be "unhelpful"
The interest in the weather partly comes from its unpredictability. While sunrises, eclipses, transits of Venus & times of high tides are know years in advance, the weather always defies perfect prediction & long may that situation remain!!

LOCAL AREA OUTLOOK----FRI. 22nd to MON. 25th JUNE
Very unsettled during this period, with Monday probably the best day. An area of low pressure will move SW to NE across Britain, with the low over Scandinavia by Monday. Friday is likely to be cloudy throughout, with spells of rain, the greatest amount a.m. Saturday should see only a little occasional rain, with some dry, brighter spells. By Sunday, the low should have passed through, so we should be in the brighter, though showery weather, with sunny intervals. By Monday, the effects of the low should be weakening, with some sunshine & the odd shower. After starting with E or NE winds, there should be a switch to a W. quarter , mostly around force 3 or 4 & temperatures 2 or 3 degrees below normal by day.

This 4-day period will be unsettled overall, with Wednesday set to be the best day. Tuesday is likely to be rather cloudy, with a few sunny intervals, but also showers around. Winds will be light & it will feel a touch warmer at 17. Wednesday should be dry with some sunshine. Things start to go downhill on Thursday, as a low to the SW moves across Britain, with a slow-moving front bringing a period of rain, especially evening & overnight. Winds will pick up in strength from the E. Friday will see winds back in the west, but the emphasis will be on cloud & showers with only intervals of sunshine. Summer is still on hold, but at least we have been much, much drier than many parts of Britain!

LOCAL AREA OUTLOOK----SAT 16th to TUES.19th JUNE
A low pressure centre over the Irish Republic will move NE across N. England & into Scandinavia by Sunday. This will result in a spell of cool & unsettled weather during this period, with often cloudy skies & some spells of rain, often light (with total amounts of rain much less than further south).Winds will be at their strongest on Saturday & from the NE, but later in the period will be lighter & more variable in direction. There will be too much cloud around for any frost, but daytime temperature values will be around 3 to 5 degrees below the seasonal norm. Some sunny intervals to start next week, but no heatwaves!

LOCAL AREA OUTLOOK----FRI. 15th to MON. 18th
Not a promising period! A deep low in the SW approaches will move NE to be over N.England by Saturday. Pitlochry is near the northern edge of its associated rain belt but I am leaning towards the pessimistic side. Friday is expected to be dull with spells of rain, often light, just occasionally moderate. It will be very cool with winds E to NE force 4 to 5. Saturday should be mainly cloudy, cool & breezy, though with any rain mainly light & occasional. Sunday promises to be a little better, possibly any rain more likely in the evening & winds a little lighter. Monday looks like a day of sunny intervals & showers, with winds into the W. Daytime temperatures way down on normal throughout the period, normal being17 degrees & expected values 9 to 12.
