THURSDAY 14th JULY----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1730Hr
The morning, much as the previous day, proved to have the lion's share of the sunshine, with rather cloudy skies during the afternoon. The evening is likely to remain dry, but rather cloudy. Some clear spells are expected during the night, with lowest temperatures around 10 degrees.
OUTLOOK
FRIDAY should start off with some sunshine, but a deterioration is likely as the day goes on, with more cloud around by afternoon & the prospect of some lightish rain later. Highest temperatures will be down on today's, at about 18 degrees.
THE WEEKEND threatens to be unsettled with spells of rain & below normal temperatures. Low pressure will be situated right over Scotland.

Probably completely dry today, with broken cloud & some sunshine at times. With light breezes, it is likely to feel warm in the sunnier spells. Maximum temperature reaching 19 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Dry. Some sunshine during the evening & clear spells overnight. A chillier night than for some time, with minimum temperatures down to about 4 degrees.
OUTLOOK
Much of THURSDAY should be dry with some sunshine & feeling warm with maximum temperatures up to about 20.

RANNOCH STATION---Travel north or south for some of Scotland's most dramatic scenery
Rannoch is one of the most desolate & remote stations on the entire U.K. network. Here the morning sleeper is seen arriving, on time, from London Euston. What a massive change of environment it must prove for those who boarded at Euston & are now about to alight here! Once out of the station, a notice indicates a welcome to Perth & Kinross, but its still a long, lonely road to Kinloch Rannoch & eventually, Pitlochry.
TUESDAY 12th JULY----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1745Hrs
High pressure is now centred over Scotland, but although the very unsettled weather of recent days has been rather more benign today, conditions have been nothing to write home about, with rather large amounts of cloud & highest temperatures about 4 degrees below the norm. for time of year.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
One or two light showers are tracking north - south well to the west of us. The period should be dry, though mostly rather cloudy, just a few overnight breaks. Minimum temperatures around 8 or 9 degrees.
OUTLOOK
WEDNESDAY will, hopefully, be one of the better days this week, with some sunshine, especially during the morning, but rather more cloudy during the afternoon. With light winds, it will feel warm in the sunshine, with temperatures a few degrees up on today's.
THURSDAY should be dry with some sunshine, but during FRIDAY, the weather will begin to go downhill, with low pressure & fronts dominating the scene.

TUESDAY 12th JULY
HEADLINES @ 0830Hrs
With 23.8 mms of rain in the past 24 hrs, Pitlochry is likely to have been one of the wettest places in the U.K. The showers were so slow moving & many seemed to cluster around our area. Pressure has been rising for 5 days now. yet it hasn't translated into significantly- improving weather. After all the rain, the lawns need cutting, but this morning, the grass is still soaking wet. I am putting my hopes on Wednesday & Thursday for that & a few more gardening jobs!
PITLOCHRY TODAY
Starting cloudy, but currently no significant rain anywhere acoss the mainland of Great Britain. Overall, there will be rather cloudy skies today, with sunshine at a premium, but the risk of showers is much lower than on recent days, though can't totally be ruled out altogether, particularly during the afternoon. Temperatures will still struggle to get to normal values, probably topping at about 18 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Much of the time should be dry, with perhaps a little sunshine during the evening & some breaks in the cloud overnight. Lowest temperatures around 9 degrees.
OUTLOOK
WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY & EARLY FRIDAY are likely to be the best parts of the week, with more in the way of sunshine & somewhat higher temperatures. Things are looking more unsettled thereafter.

MONDAY 11th JULY----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1740Hr
Many places in Britain have had a completely dry day & few of those who have had a shower could have received as much as 22.3mms. But that was Pitlochry's total from just 2 showers today, the one around 1030 to 1130 being particularly heavy at this site. The problem with both showers was that both intensified on their final approach & both moved extremely slowly. It was fascinating watching their progress on the rainfall radar map.
The area to the south & south-east of us is now under threat for a time this evening.
In hindsight, a rather over-optimistic forecast this morning, but at least things will improve over the next few days. Remember, places as near as Aberfeldy have had much more rain over the past few days---our luck ran out today!!
The maximum temperature was only 15.4 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
The shower risk should diminish, within the next couple of hours, with some cloud breaks overnight.
OUTLOOK
Generally things on the up for a few days, though still some risk of an odd shower tomorrow. WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY should be dry.

MONDAY 11th JULY
HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
A weak front is still affecting the area at present, but pressure is building & should gradually kill off the showers & see the back of this very unsettled period that has been around since the 5th. So an improvement to come, if only temporary, as the longer -term outlook for July would appear to be very changeable, with no signs of a prolonged warm & settled spell!!
PITLOCHRY TODAY
There should be some good dry spells today, with intervals of sunshine, but also just a few scattered showers about.
Winds will be fairly light, mostly from N or NW & maximum temperatures should reach about 17 degrees, a touch down on yesterday.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
There should be some evening sunshine, followed by clear spells overnight. It is likely to be a little cooler overnight than recently, with a minimum of about 7 or 8 degrees.
OUTLOOK
Apart from the chance of an odd shower, the next few days should see the benefit from high pressure building, with mainly dry conditions, clearer skies & more in the way of sunshine, though this will be a temporary improvement, with no hot spells on the horizon.

SUNDAY 10th JULY----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1645Hrs
A bit of a shower on at present, but after today's showers, there are only 1.4mms in the raingauge. The maximum temperature stands at 19.3 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A few showers around at first, but largely dying out later. There may, however, be another cloudy, showery patch to come towards morning. Lowest temperature remaining close to double figures.
OUTLOOK
MONDAY---the showery weather is proving reluctant to die out & the morning may well remain cloudy with showers, with perhaps some improvement for the afternoon. Temperatures down a degree or two.
TUESDAY may still see some showers, but prospects are drier & brighter for WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY, as a ridge of high pressure builds.

SUNDAY 10th JULY
HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
The weather charts look somewhat tamer now than was the case for much of last week. A ridge of high pressure is building for the middle of next week & we should begin to see the last of the downpours, remembering, of course, that some places fared a lot worse than Pitlochry. It's quite a pleasant start, but the sharp showers are not over just yet!
PITLOCHRY TODAY
There was a shower around 0700Hrs, but it is now likely to be dry for a time, until cloud begins to bubble up, producing a few more showers for the afternoon & evening. Some spots may receive a downpour, others may largely escape. It will feel quite warm in any sunny intervals, as temperatures peak at around 19 or 20 degrees. Winds will be light to moderate W to SW.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
There will be some further showers around, especially to the east of Pitlochry. Minimum temperatures will remain in double figures.
OUTLOOK
MONDAY should see broken cloud, some sunny spells, but the risk of a few showers continues.
THEREAFTER, there should be more in the way of dry weather & sunny spells, as high pressure starts to build.

SATURDAY 9th JULY----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
There were some good spells of sunshine this morning & the maximum temperature of 20.4 occurred then. Skies turned more threatening this afternoon & around 1530Hrs, we caught one of the heavier showers, though only giving 0.9mms. A rainfall radar map showing the situation on a separate posting below, indicates how valuable it is to click on rain today, particularly in these showery situations.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Some further showers are likely, particularly in the early part of the evening. Some will be heavy, as is the case at the moment (1630). Later on, showers should largely die out, to give some clear spells. Overnight minimum about 10.
OUTLOOK
SUNDAY is expected to be much like today, with some sunshine & broken cloud during the morning, but an increased shower risk by the afternoon. Maximum temperature around 18 or 19 degrees.
MONDAY is likely to see the odd shower around, but the next couple of days should see something of a temporary respite from the unsettled conditions.

In an article in today's Daily Telegraph, some of the "old stagers" from the BBC Weather Centre, take a swipe at today's "young whippersnappers" who take to our screens several times each day to bring us the latest forecast.
In words that might be suited to an article in the final edition of the News of the World, Michael Fish, Bill Giles & John Kettley(all trained meteorologists), feel that some of their replacements were only employed because they were cheap & looked good in front of the camera.Unlike in their day, they claim that many television forecasters these days do not know " what the hell they are talking about" & are prone to exaggeration, using expressions such as "bitterly cold"when quite inappropriate.
The veterans say that they all started because they had a passion for the subject from school-days, whereas now, motivation is more to do with getting on television.
I agree with much of what the veterans say & think if often appears that some of the younger presenters must have had minimum training in meteorology. It also comes across that the BBC have a distinct preference for the younger presenters, especially attractive females; the older woman is definitely out! Barry

SATURDAY 9th JULY
HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Low pressure still dominates the scene, with many parts experiencing heavy showers, while others largely miss them. Edinburgh was clobbered by heavy downpours for a time yesterday.Pitlochry was very lucky.
PITLOCHRY TODAY
Generally rather cloudy today. There are no significant showers in our area at present, ( though there are a few light ones)-- but some are expected to develop, especially this afternoon. As in recent days, some spots may largely escape, while others near-by receive significant amounts of rain in a short time.(Why not check raintoday in favourite links, which will show just where showers are & their direction of movement---but remember, that some showers can develop in situ, whilst others may die away). In any sunny intervals, it should feel quite warm, though temperatures are likely to reach only between 18 &19 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Becoming mainly dry, with sunny intervals/clear spells & lowest temperature around 9 degrees.
OUTLOOK
SUNDAY--A few showers around, especially during the afternoon. Feeling quite warm in the sunny spells.
EARLY NEXT WEEK--The low pressure responsible for the unsettled spell will begin to move away to the NE & the weather should start to dry out, with more sunshine, though temperatures will be on the low side of average.

FRIDAY 8th JULY----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1715Hrs
Big differences across Scotland today, with some areas getting a good hammering with heavy showers eg Edinburgh & others, including Pitlochry, staying dry, with some sunshine & a max. temp. of 19.1. This is so often what happens in"showery weather"
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Probably staying dry this evening, though a sheet of high cloud has encroached during the afternoon, making the sunshine rather watery. There is a risk of some showery activity later in the night, though areas to the east of us are more vulnerable. Minimum temperature around 10 degrees.
OUTLOOK
SATURDAY ---There is a possibility that the day could start cloudy & showery, though there is some doubt about this. Much of the afternoon should be dry with broken cloud & some sunny spells, these lasting into the evening. Temperatures perhaps a degree or so down on today's.
SUNDAY may well stay mainly dry, with broken cloud & some sunshine & temperatures up to about 18 degrees

FRIDAY 8th JULY
HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
A pleasant start this morning, but it's still low pressure in charge.
PITLOCHRY TODAY
A dry, bright start which should last for an hour or two, before cloud begins to build. From lunchtime onwards, the shower risk increases & during the afternoon, there could be some heavy showers around. Amounts of rain will vary considerably over short distances. Winds will be light to moderate from the E, while maximum temperatures reach 18 or 19 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Rather cloudy at times, with still a shower risk, though this is greater further to the east. Some clear spells overnight, with lowest temperatures down to around 9 or 10 degrees.
OUTLOOK
SATURDAY is still essentially unsettled, but there is a better chance of more emphasis on some dry periods, with sunny spells & rather less on cloudy, showery periods (but take a brolly just in case!)
SUNDAY again, hopefully, should see more of the dry spells, with sunshine, & less of the cloud & showers. On both days, temperatures should reach around 18 or 19 degrees (near normal )

Some local rainfall totals for the 24 Hrs ending 0900 G.M.T.today------Perth Airport 31.7mms, Aberfeldy 38.5mms, Carnoustie 45.6mms, Auchterhouse 73.1mms
Today has been showery, though Pitlochry has escaped the worst (There were several heavy showers around House of Bruar late morning & lunchtime). Currently, there is a line of showers to our west, tracking north. Cloudy skies have tended to dominate, with little in the way of sunshine. Between now & Sunday, a low pressure system will amble across Britain from SW to NE, ending up over Norway by Sunday.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Perhaps the odd shower this evening, but a good deal of dry weather with sunny ints, followed by clear spells. Minimum temperature around 9 degrees.
OUTLOOK
FRIDAY should start dry with some sunshine. There may be an odd shower during the afternoon. A degree or two warmer.
THE WEEKEND will see some dry weather with sunny intervals, but afternoon showers are likely, especially on Saturday. Maximum temperatures in the range 17 to 19 degrees.

THE WEEKEND
THURSDAY 7th JULY
HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Rather wet at time of observation, as a rain area trundles further north into the Highlands. The past 24hours have seen the equivalent of 50% of an average full month July rainfall total & other places locally appear to have had even more; Leuchars had 33.8mms between 2100Hrs on 5th July & 2100Hrs on the 6th; Aberfeldy had 44 mms in the 24 hrs up to 0900GMT on the 6th & more statistics will emerge during the day. The rain we had around 1930Hrs yesterday evening was particularly intense for a time.
PITLOCHRY TODAY
More of a sunshine & showers day, following on from the more continuous rain of yesterday. Probably amounts of sunshine will be fairly restricted & when showers do occur, they are likely to be rather heavy. On the positive side, it should be 2 or 3 degrees warmer than yesterday.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Showers will tend to die out this evening & there should be some clear intervals. More showers may spread in later in the night, though these may pass more to the east of Pitlochry. Minimum temperatures should be around 9 degrees.
OUTLOOK
Low pressure will amble across Britain during the next few days, leaving a sunshine & showers type of weather. So while there will be some dry spells with some sunshine, things are not totally settled & more cloudy periods with some showers are also on the cards, though showers perhaps becoming fewer with time. Maximum temperatures will be in the 17 to 19 range throughout the period.

WEDNESDAY 6th JULY----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1730Hrs
Between 0900H & 1730H, 14.9mms of rain has fallen, to add to the 11.8mms that fell last night. Those two totals alone are equivalent to 45% of an average full month's total for July. Today's maximum temperature only reached 14.0 degrees, the coolest day since June 21st.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
The continuous rain is likely to be replaced by more showery rain as the evening goes on, with a few dry spells in between. Nevertheless, the situation is still very unsettled & more is likely to be added to the rainfall total by morning.
Minimum temperature around 10 degrees.
OUTLOOK
Low pressure will continue dominating the weather situation for some days to come. Frequent showers are expected, sometimes heavy, but interspersed with more broken cloud & a little sunshine at times. Maximum temperatures should gradually rise from today's low figure towards 18 or 19 degrees by the weekend.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
The rain is likely to continue through the evening, but die out after midnight. Lowest temperatures should be around 9 or 10 degrees.
OUTLOOK
THURSDAY is expected to be an unsettled day, with heavy showers which may merge into longer spells of rain. A few drier & brighter spells may also occur.
FRIDAY & THE WEEKEND look like remaining rather unsettled, with some showers or even a longer spell of rain. As winds move more to a SW direction by the weekend, it should become a little warmer.

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
A bit frustrating at present, to find a sheet of North Sea low cloud over the area, an unfortunate feature of the weather in our part of the country when winds come off the cool North Sea during an otherwise warm, settled spell. Give it time; it should start to break later in the morning----but remember, this is the final day of the current settled spell.
PITLOCHRY TODAY
Some low cloud from the North Sea affecting the area to start the day. This should break up later to give another dry, warm day, with patchy cloud & some sunny spells. Maximum temperatures should reach around 23 degrees, with gentle breezes from the S.E.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A dry warm evening, will be followed by a dry night with broken cloud. (There is just an outside chance of a shower, more likely over the mountains to the north of us). Lowest temperature around 10 degrees.
OUTLOOK
TUESDAY will be a cloudier & cooler day, with some rain around later, though most of this only light. Temperatures about 5 or 6 degrees down on today's.
WEDNESDAY will be mostly cloudy & cool with spells of rain.

JUNE 2011----MONTHLY SUMMARY
JUNE was cooler than average, with both maximum & minimum values 1 degree below the long-term average. The month's highest temperature was 26.5 on the 3rd & only this day & on the 2nd & 19th, did temperatures exceed 20 degrees. The 11th was the coolest day, with a high of just 12.0 degrees Amazingly, June's average maximum temperature was only 0.7 degrees higher than that of April 2011!
The month's lowest temperature was 1.0 on the morning of the 10th. There were 5 nights with a ground frost at this prone site, the lowest being -2.9 on the 10th.
Rainfall at 64.0mms was just 3% above the long-term average. 13 days had 1.0mm or more & the wettest 24hr period was the 20th with 14.1mms.
This is unlikely to be a June that sticks in the memory, with no long-term records broken. It was disappointing for those who welcome sun & warmth, though gardeners & growers would have little cause for complaint.
