WEDNESDAY 29th JUNE

HEADLINES @ 0800Hrs
There was a ground frost at this site last night! A pleasant start to the day with sunny intervals & good breaks in the cloud.      PLEASE NOTE--THERE WILL NOT BE AN EVENING REPORT ON THIS OCCASION

PITLOCHRY TODAY
A dry start to the day, but shower cloud will build up & it is likely that we will be affected by at least one or two showers, these likely to be on the sharp side. As in all showery situations, any one spot can be lucky & miss all or most of the showers. (favourite links---rain today---is always a great help to seeing just what is around the area). Highest temperatures will be around 17/18 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Any remaining showers should die out & once again, it will be a rather chilly night, with lows down to around 5 degrees.

OUTLOOK
THURSDAY will be a mix of dry bright spells, punctuated by more cloudy interludes & a shower risk. FRIDAY/WEEKEND should become more settled, with broken cloud & sunny spells, little chance of any showers & becoming a little warmer.

MONDAY 27th JUNE ----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1900Hrs            SEE NOTE BELOW            SEE NOTE BELOW
A cloudy day, with a maximum temperature of 16.5 degrees. The rain predicted, did not materialize in Pitlochry, but a look at this afternoon's rain radar maps, shows that plenty of heavy rain came so close to the town, just a few miles to the east of us, in a belt parallel to the East coast.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Rain is still close by to the east of us, but generally moving in the direction of the North Sea, so probably staying dry & cloud becoming more broken. By dawn, temperatures may be down to about 6 degrees.

OUTLOOK
TUESDAY should be generally dry, with sunny spells & patches of well-broken cloud. Maximum temperature, 17/18 degrees.
WEDNESDAY should be a mixture of sunshine & a few showers

THERE WILL NOT BE A WEATHER SERVICE ON TUESDAY MORNING.   THE EVENING UPDATE WILL BE AS NORMAL.

MONDAY 27th JUNE

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Cloudy & dry at present, after a night when temperatures remained in double figures. Yesterday, St. Helier (Jersey ) reached a temperature of 31 degrees & today, Andy Murray will be playing in fierce heat at Wimbledon.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
A cloudy day ahead. It should be dry for the first 2 or 3 hours, but after that, some initially light rain is expected to spread into our area. During the afternoon & for a time this evening, the rain may become rather persistent & moderate at times. The maximum temperature will reach around 16 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Rain may contiue for some time, before dry conditions with broken cloud spread from the west. The night will end up colder than recent ones, with a minimum of 7 degrees.

OUTLOOK
TUESDAY should see a good deal of dry, bright weather with just a few scattered showers around.
WEDNESDAY should be mainly dry, with just the chance of an odd shower.

TUESDAY should be brighter & fresher.

SUNDAY 26th JUNE

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Currently raining, though a very mild start. A frustrating day over much of Scotland, knowing that much of England is on a heatwave. Still, there are people who do not like really hot weather, so at least on this occasion, they will escape the heat.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
A short spell of rain will occur during the next hour or so, along with overcast skies. The afternoon should have a few breaks in the cloud, with brief spells of sunshine, but more cloudy& showery conditions seem likely, especially later in the afternoon. Despite often large amounts of cloud, it will feel warm, with highest temperatures around 19 or 20 degrees.
Those going west from Pitlochry, are likely to see more in the way of rain. The East coast should see very little.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Often cloudy, perhaps with occasional slight rain, but very mild, with lowest temperatures in double figures.

OUTLOOK
MONDAY will still be rather warm & muggy, but a good deal of cloud is likely, with mostly small amounts of rain. Again, the West will see more rain than the East.
TUESDAY should be generally brighter, fresher & cooler.

SATURDAY 25th JUNE----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1815Hrs
Apart from a brief spell of drizzle this morning, it has been a dry day, though rather short on sunshine. The best time of the day was late afternoon & at 1815H, the thermometer was at it's maximum for the day at 17.7 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
It should be a dry evening, with breaks in the cloud & a little more sunshine. It will start dry during the hours of darkness, but another area of rain will start to affect us soon after dawn, as a warm front moves up from the south.

OUTLOOK
SUNDAY will start cloudy with some rain around, though this should gradually die out during the morning. By afternoon, it should become dry, bright & warm with the maximum temperature reaching in the range 19 to 21 degrees, very much depending on sunshine amounts, within a rather warm & humid airstream.
By MONDAY & TUESDAY, winds will be back into the west, a cold front will have gone through, lowering humidity & temperature & the weather will be into a sunny spells & showers type.  Needless to say, the short-lived heatwave (up to 31) will be restricted to SE England.

SATURDAY 25th JUNE

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
A weakening rain belt crossed the area earlier, leaving a cloudy morning.  The overall U.K. picture emphasises rising temperature & by tomorrow, a brief  hot spell.  Glastonbury & Wimbledon look really good this weekend!

PITLOCHRY TODAY
A cloudy morning, with perhaps the odd spit of rain. The afternoon should see some breaking of the cloud with a few sunny intervals. Becoming warm, with a maximum of 19 or 20 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Dry with some sunshine & clear spells at first tonight, before cloud increases & some rain spreads from the SW by dawn. Lowest temperatures around 9 degrees.

OUTLOOK
SUNDAY is likely to see some rain during the morning, but a dry, brighter afternoon, when it will feel warm.
START of NEXT WEEK---Rather unsettled, with some dry weather with sunny spells, but also some showers. Becoming cooler.

UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
It's been quite a reasonable day, with breaks in the cloud giving some sunny intervals. No showers have affected the area.
The maximum temperature was 16.6, below average for late June & so far this month only 7 days have been above the average.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A bright dry start to the evening, though a sheet of high cloud will later spread from the SW, heralding the approach of a warm front. During the night, this front will bring some mainly light rain to the area. It will be much milder than last night.

OUTLOOK
It will be a changeable weekend, though on the positive side, it should be rather warm. There is likely to be some rain on Saturday morning, improving in the afternoon. Another rain area will affect us for a time on Sunday. FRIDAY 10th JUNE

HEADLINES @ 0830Hrs
Drought orders have been issued today for parts of Eastern England, especially East Anglia, following a record dry spring. (March to May rain in Pitlochry was 184.6mms---so no such problems in our neck of the woods!). It was decidely nippy last night, with the air temperature down to 1.0 & ground value down to -2.9.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
Probably dry with some sunshine for much of the morning, but with clouds starting to build. There will be some showers around this afternoon & hail or thunder are possibilities. Places within short distances of one another could have large differences in rainfall amounts received. Winds will be light, showers will move slowly from south to north, highest temperatures will reach around 15 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Any showers dying out during the evening to give some clear spells. A chilly night once again, with perhaps the odd pocket of ground frost.

OUTLOOK
Sunshine & showers seem likely for SATURDAY.  More general rain could spread into the area from the south later on SUNDAY. Best temperatures in the 14 to 16 range.

THURSDAY 9th JUNE----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
This morning was mainly cloudy with showers (1.9mms fell from these showers). The afternoon saw dry weather with some sunny periods, with a cool W to SW wind pegging temperatures at 14.0 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Some sunshine this evening & clear skies at times overnight. A low minimum temperature is expected, with some spots getting a ground frost.

OUTLOOK
FRIDAY should start cool & clear, but once again some showers are expected to develop. There may well be more showers around tomorrow, especially during the afternoon. Maximum temperatures around 14 or 15 degrees.
THE WEEKEND seems likely to remain rather unsettled & cool. As well as a few sunny intervals, there seems likely to be showers around, perhaps merging at times to give a more general spell of rain.

THURSDAY 9th JUNE

HEADLINES @ 0845Hrs
Rather cloudy, but dry at present. Winds have turned from SE to SW as the low pressure centre has drifted north.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
Probably a short spell of showery weather later in the morning. There is a good chance that the afternoon will stay mainly dry, with some sunshine. Winds will be back in the west & it will still be cool, with a maximum of 14 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Mostly dry with some clear spells & chilly. Some places may get a ground frost.

OUTLOOK
FRIDAY will start cool & as the day goes on, there is likely to be more emphasis on the showers. Staying cool.
THE WEEKEND promises to be somewhat changeable, with the familiar mix of sunshine & showers. Below average temperatures.

WEDNESDAY 8th JUNE----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
The showers occurred today just after 11am & again at 1530. In between the darker skies, cloud broke a little to give some glimpses of sunshine. Today's highest temperature was 15.2 & the rainfall total between 0900 & 1630 was 2.7mms.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
There could still be a sharp shower, especially during the early evening, but with time, they will largely die out, leaving some clear skies. It will be chilly overnight, as temperatures fall to about 6 degrees.

OUTLOOK
There will be a bit more of a SW breeze on THURSDAY, There will still be a few showers around, but probably rather more sunshine than on recent days. Highest temperatures around 14 degrees. THE WEEKEND should see fewer showers & more in the way of sunshine, but nothing exciting temperature-wise (About 14 by day, with chilly nights ).

WEDNESDAY 8th JUNE

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
6.3mms of rain yesterday from late afternoon/early evening showers.Broken cloud this morning & dry at present. Once again, we came rather close to a ground frost last night.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
It's still sunshine & showers.although it should be dry for a time. Because it is impossible to forecast more than an hour or two ahead whether any one spot is lined up for a shower, I suggest you check raintoday.co.uk to see if Pitlochry is threatened by a heavy shower (they are moving from between S & SE ). There should be rather more sunshine around today, with perhaps a peak in shower activity between mid afternoon & mid-evening. Highest temperatures should reach near to 15 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Still a shower risk, especially in the first part of the evening. Some sunny intervals, then clearing skies overnight. Minimum temperature around 6 degrees.

OUTLOOK
THURSDAY will see a similar recipe of sunshine & showers, though perhaps fewer showers around. Winds more into the S.W.& a bit fresher. Still cool at 13 to 14 degrees, with a chilly night to follow.
FURTHER AHEAD---Perhaps a bit less emphasis on the shower risk, as the low centre causing the problem, moves further away. No great shakes yet on daytime temperatures!

WEDNESDAY 1st JUNE----EVENING

UPDATE @ 1700Hrs
Rather disappointing, with a breeze gusting close to force 6 & sunshine at a premium. On the positive side, it remained largely dry & the air was mild, temperatures rising to 16.3 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT

THE WEEKEND will be somewhat cooler, though it should stay dry, with some sunshine. Winds will blow from the east.

SOME JUNES TO REMEMBER----& SOME TO FORGET

June is normally one of the drier months of the year, though not in 1966, when 212mms fell. This was Pitlochry's wettest June in records going back to 1954.

The watering cans & hosepipes must have been out during June 1988, when only 13mms of rain fell all month.

June 1988 was not only very dry, but also had the highest average maximum temperature for any June going back to 1976.(19.7)

June 1987 must have been dreadful, with an average maximum temperature of only 14.8, nearly a degree lower than April 2011.

June 2006 holds the record for the hottest June day in Pitlochry, 29.3.  Not many of those in these parts!

In June 1998, a reminder that frost at this time of year is still possible. The minimum fell to 0.0 degrees.

MAY 2011 SUMMARY

Although, overall,  a rather disappointing month---all the more so by immediately following a stunningly good month---May temperatures were actually very close to the long-term average values.  The mean maximum temperature was only 0.3 degrees below normal & the mean minimum temperature was 0.1 above.

The month's highest temperature was only 19.5 (on the 7th ), compared with 21.2 on April 10th. May's lowest temperature was -2.9 on the 4th, whereas April was never lower than -1.1 degrees. May saw 4 air frosts & 11 ground frosts.  No record temperature extremes for May were broken this year.

Rainfall was significantly above normal, its 92 mms being 151% of the long-term average, making it the wettest May since 2002. Thunder was heard at 1530hrs on the 9th & there was a slight snow cover on Ben Vrackie on the 20th.

                                                                                                                                                        B.G. 01/06/11

WEDNESDAY 1st JUNE

MAY'S MEAN MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS 1.2 DEGREES BELOW THAT FOR APRIL---VERY RARE.
A FULL SUMMARY WILL APPEAR LATER.

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Breezy & cloudy, though dry.  A happy new month; lets hope it's more like April than May!!

PITLOCHRY TODAY
A mainly cloudy day, with much of any brightness or intervals of sunshine, later in the day. There may be some patchy light rain about, but amounts in total will be very small. It will be rather breezy & humid, but it should feel rather warm in any bright spells later in the day.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Probably remaining rather cloudy, though bright at times. It should be dry & mild overnight.

OUTLOOK
THURSDAY should be a day of broken cloud, some sunshine & warmer than we have been used to.
FRIDAY should see sunny spells, with temperatures over 21 (over 70 in old money)
