MONDAY 28th MARCH
HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
A cloudy & quite cold start to the day, with my ground minimum down to -4.9. ( Not all gardens will have gone down to these levels, especially where the cold air can readily drain away down a slope). I was reading a weather article yesterday, which referred to March 1965, when apparently the temperature on the 29th, proved to be the HIGHEST of the ENTIRE YEAR in some spots in N.E. England.(Doesn't say much for the SUMMER that year!!)
PITLOCHRY TODAY
After a cloudy start, the day should remain mostly dry, with cloud breaks developing to give some sunny spells. It will again be on the mild side, with a maximum of 11 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
This period is expected to stay dry & there should be some breaks in the cloud. Most places will have a ground frost, while the air temperature in some spots falls close to freezing. Some mist patches are also likely.
OUTLOOK
TUESDAY should remain mostly dry, with some cloud patches & occasional sunny intervals. The following few days are likely to be more changeable, with some rain around, though temperatures should be on the mild side, with frost unlikely.

SUNDAY 27th MARCH----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1800Hrs
A very reasonable day all in all, with variable amounts of cloud, punctuated with sunny intervals. There were a few spots of rain while I was gardening late this afternoon, but not enough to bother about. I see on the radar that there are still a few showers to our N & NE which could affect us during the early evening. The maximum temperature was an above average 11.5 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Rather cloudy this evening, with perhaps an odd shower, but much of the night will be dry, with perhaps a few clear spells. Temperatures should stay up at about 3 or 4 degrees, though a ground frost is possible in the most prone spots.
OUTLOOK
MONDAY will be rather cloudy, with a few sunny intervals. Apart from the chance of a light shower at first, it should be mostly dry. Maximum temperature around 10 degrees. During the REST of THE WEEK, there will still be some dry bright weather, but generally, it will become rather more changeable, with daytime temperatures near normal, but a reducing chance of frost.

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Misty low cloud & light rain out there at present, so I'm not tempted into the garden, though gardeners may well be pleased to see a bit of a damping, following about 10 days without significant rain. The temperature at present is 5.6 degrees, though there was a ground frost overnight.
PITLOCHRY TODAY
A mainly cloudy day, with patchy light rain or drizzle on occasions. Any rain is more likely this morning & any brighter intervals, this afternoon. It will be around 4 degrees cooler than yesterday, with maximum temperature at about 8 or 9 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
The period should be mainly cloudy, but dry. There may be a few clear spells & these will allow temperatures to fall to around 0 to +1 as a minimum. Many places are likely to have a ground frost.

UPDATE @ 1700Hrs
FRIDAY turned out sunnier & milder than expected, with the top temperature reaching 13.8 degrees. Mind you, we were lucky, as a glance at a recent radar image, showed several showers not far away.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Partly cloudy skies this evening, but mainly dry. After midnight, there is likely to be some occasional rain spreading down from the north, though amounts are likely to be small. Most places should escape a frost, though lowest temperatures will only be 2 or 3 degrees above freezing.
OUTLOOK
SATURDAY mainly dry, but it is likely to be more cloudy & a few degrees colder than today. SUNDAY should be dry, with a mixture of cloud & some sunny intervals & perhaps a degree or two up on Saturday's temperatures.

TUESDAY 22nd MARCH----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
The morning was rather cloudy, though the sky appeared more broken towards Perth, in contrast to the low cloud cover over Ben Vrackie. Around noon, a cold front passed over & though it was mostly rainless, there was one small patch that had Pitlochry's name on it. Thereafter, cloud broke up well, to give some sunshine & very mild temperatures (maximum 14.1 )
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Some clear spells this evening, but perhaps rather more cloudy overnight. Not as mild as last night, with minimum air temperatures down to 4 degrees, with perhaps a touch of ground frost in prone spots.
OUTLOOK
WEDNESDAY---After a rather cloudy start, there should be some cloud breaks later, with intervals of sunshine. Mild again, with highs of 13 or 14 degrees.
THURSDAY---Still mild with variable amounts of cloud & some sunny spells.
FRIDAY---Somewhat colder, with rather cloudy skies & perhaps some light rain.
LAST NIGHT'S MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 9.1 DEGREES, WAS HIGHER THAN THE AVERAGE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE IN JUNE (8.5). IT IS NOT, HOWEVER, A MARCH RECORD (THAT WAS 9.9 IN THE YEAR 2000)

DAYLIGHT & DARKNESS ON THE VERNAL EQUINOX
At the Equinoxes, the dawn & dusk lines run parallel to lines of longitude, so that every place on the same longitude, will have dawn & dusk at the same time, no matter what the latitude. At around 10 o'clock this morning, both Brazil & Western Greenland were experiencing dawn.while Japan & Central Australia were having dusk. All places on the planet would receive equal lengths of daylight & darkness. Between now & high summer, the width of the daylight will gradually expand over the Northern Hemisphere, but contract over the Southern Hemishere

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
It's the Vernal Equinox today, one of just 2 days each year when all parts of Planet Earth receive equal amounts of day & night. It's also, on this occasion, likely to be a particularly nice day, with the thermometer already at 10.3, following an overnight minimum of 6.2. I'm going to do my first grass-cutting session of the year & whatever you're doing today, take full advantage of the weather & enjoy!
PITLOCHRY TODAY
There will be a mixture today of cloud patches & some sunshine. It will be breezy from the W. but temperatures should be around 5 degrees above the March average at 13 or 14 degrees. (In the shelter of the Grampians when the wind is in the west, parts of Aberdeenshire may hit 17 degrees).
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Partly cloudy, breezy & mild.
OUTLOOK
The next few days should be largely dry & mild, with a mixture of some cloudy spells, but also some intervals of sunshine.

SATURDAY 19th MARCH----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
I was a little over-optimistic in my morning forecast, with actually more cloud & less sunshine on the menu than expected. There were also a few nuisance-value showers, which should have stayed over Crianlarich, Tyndrum or Killin! Mind you, the rainfall total here was only 0.1mms, so hardly a day-wrecker!
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Rather cloudy, though perhaps just enough breaks this evening to see the "over-sized moon" Mostly cloudy overnight, so no frost expected. They may be some patchy slight rain late in the night, but amounts should be negligible.Minimum temperature about 3 degrees.
OUTLOOK
SUNDAY---Perhaps a little light rain early on, but otherwise a dry day, with a few sunny intervals probable during the afternoon. A little milder at 11 degrees.
START of NEXT WEEK----Broken cloud with some sunshine & mild.

BEN VRACKIE from near EDRADOUR + THERE'S DEDICATION!!
At the end of each month, my weather data is forwarded to an amateur U.K.-wide organisation called the CLIMATOLOGICAL OBSERVERS LINK. Another, relatively local, fellow-contributor is a chap living & recording the weather in ARDTAINAIG,on the SE shore of Loch Tay. I have never actually met him, but his dedication to weather observing, must put him in a similar category to Rose, who I mentioned in one of yesterday's blogs (she made 6 observations on each of 6 days a week for the Met Office)
In the January edition of the "COL" magazine, the Ardtainaig observer reports " I cannot remember during the 60 years I have been here (& having officially recorded weather statistics since 1957), ice constituting such a hazard." What dedication! I must pay him a visit in the not too distant future.

SATURDAY 19th MARCH
HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Not as frosty as the previous night (rather more cloud). Quite a pleasant start to the day, with some blue sky around.
PITLOCHRY TODAY
A dry day, with broken cloud & some sunshine. Winds from the SW increasing a little during the day. Maximum temperature 9 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Some clear spells at first, but more cloud around later. (The moon is supposed to look extra large at present, as the distance between the earth & moon is less than average---probably more chance of seeing it early in the eastern sky) Not as cold as on recent nights, because of cloud cover, minimum 2 or 3 degrees.
OUTLOOK
SUNDAY---Rather cloudy, but mainly dry. Perhaps a few breaks in the afternoon. A little milder at 11 degrees maximum.
BEYOND---Remaining dry, partly cloudy, but also some sunshine. Rather mild.

FRIDAY 18th----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
The morning was the better part of the day, with good spells of sunshine soon clearing the sharp overnight frost. During the afternoon, cloud began to increase, though it was still bright at times. Several bands of showers tried to make it through to our area, but only two partially succeeded, one about 1500Hrs which gave a few spots & one about 1610 which gave 0.1mms--the smallest amount that it is possible to measure. It is often the case that rain bands in the west are weakened & fragmented by the mountains, leaving much smaller amounts to fall on Pitlochry & even less in places like Dundee. Today's highest temperature was 8.1.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Any showers at first should quickly die out & the remainder of the period should be dry. Cloud is expected to remain well-broken, once again ensuring a fairly sharp frost. Minimum temperatures are likely to fall to around -4 or -5 degrees.
OUTLOOK
SATURDAY---Mainly dry & bright with variable amounts of cloud & some spells of sunshine. Probably a touch milder than today at 9 degrees.
SUNDAY---More cloud generally than on Saturday, but it should stay dry for much of the time. It is likely to be milder than of late.
START ofNEXT WEEK----Mainly dry, with some cloudy spells, but also some sunshine at times. Temperatures above the seasonal average, so looking good for gardeners.

AUTOMATIC WEATHER DISPLAY UNIT
The above unit sitting on my desk, displays a variety of information, from sunrise/sunset times, moon phase, to information transmitted by sensors outside, about temperature, rainfall & wind data. There is no substitute, however, for an observer going outside & reading traditional instuments & most of the data produced from this site is obtained in this manner. The Met Office has been increasingly forced into using automatic stations because of the difficulty in finding people willing to commit themselves to making observations 365 days a year, an almost impossible job without the help of an assistant. I knew a lady in the Highlands who used to make 6 observations per day (&send in reports to the Met Office) on 6 days each week. Only on 1 day each week was she required to make just the 1 observation at 0900Hrs, this to allow her an opportunity to do her shopping! Such happenings are largely over, but in the interests of accuracy, there is no substitute for an observer on the spot using the basic recording equipment. Too often nowadays, data recorded in one place, is credited to another, many miles distant. In the past, for instance, Pitlochry has been credited with temperatures actually recorded in Aviemore!
FRIDAY 18th MARCH
HEADLINES @ 0845Hrs
Another sparkling morning, but very frosty overnight (air min.-5.1, ground min.-11.7). It won't have done much good to any tender young plants, but these are NOT record- breaking lows for March (1986 saw much worse).
PITLOCHRY TODAY
A cold, but mainly sunny start. The morning should remain dry, with further spells of sunshine. During the afternoon, cloud will start to build & a band of showers will move across the area from the NW. It will feel somewhat colder than yesterday, owing to the frosty start & an increasing SW wind, with highest values reaching about 7 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
The period should be dry, with mainly clear skies. It will be frosty again, with minimum temperature down to around -4 degrees.
OUTLOOK
SATURDAY will see variable amounts of cloud & some spells of sunshine & it should stay dry. Probably a touch less cold at 9 degrees. SUNDAY will be more cloudy, though generally dry. Milder at around 12 degrees. Promising start expected for the START of NEXT WEEK, when it should feel milder.

THURSDAY 17th MARCH----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
The day improved quite quickly & mid & late morning saw a fair amount of sunshine. Cloud built somewhat during the afternoon, as shower cloud developed round & about, but it remained mostly dry & bright. Temperatures were a touch higher, with a respectable maximum of 9.6.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
It should remain dry throughout, with enough clear spells overnight to allow for quite a sharp frost by dawn, down to around -4 in the air & perhaps approaching -10 on the ground in flat, grassy spots. There may well be mist patches in the valley.
OUTLOOK
FRIDAY will get off to a nippy start, but the sun should be shining, except in spots affected by mist. The morning should stay dry, with some sunshine, but cloud will build somewhat during the afternoon, with an odd shower possible. Following the frosty start & with a fresh SW breeze, it may well be a touch colder, with maximum around 7 or 8 degrees. SATURDAY is looking good--dry with some sunshine, but SUNDAY is likely to see more cloud, with perhaps a little rain.

WEDNESDAY 16th MARCH----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1700HRS
It's been a brilliant day, with long periods of sunshine. The satellite pictures showed clear skies over much of Scotland, but were partly covered in white patches; not cloud on this occasion, but lying snow!. Temperatures ended up higher than forecast at 8.4. I was too low, but BBC Online ( 5 day Pitlochry), had forecast today's maximum as 2 degrees (I suspect the person responsible must have "inversion phobia"
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Cloud is likely to move in from the SE as the evening goes on. It is possible there may be just very small amounts of slight rain or drizzle later in the night. Minimum temperatures close to or slightly below zero.
OUTLOOK
THURSDAY may start rather cloudy, but the day should be dry, with some sunshine developing. Maximum temperatures should reach about 7 degrees.

HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
A brilliant morning, though nippy(the ground minimum was down to -8.1). The Ben Vrackie area is sparkling white, though there is some valley mist lifting to low cloud. Should be a great day for a walk! (Anyone in Lee-on-the- Solent yesterday?--18 degrees!!)
PITLOCHRY TODAY
A dry & mostly sunny day is expected, though it will be more cloudy towards the coast & this cloud may advance inland later in the day. There will also be a few mist patches around at first. Temperatures should reach 4 or 5 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Rather more cloudy, though staying dry. Perhaps cloud breaks later in the night, allowing a slight frost, minimum 0 to -1.
OUTLOOK
Apart from a brief spell of rain on THURSDAY, there should be a good deal of dry weather during the coming few days, with sunny spells. Temperatures will be a little below normal by day with most nights prone to a frost.

TUESDAY 15th MARCH---EVENING. + MARCH at the HALF-WAY MARK
UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
Overcast, persistent rain & feeling cold. There was a bit of wet snow in some of the rain. I was passing through Dunkeld at about 3.45p.m.& noticed a covering of wet snow in some of the fields at the north end of the town. The height of this area is only about 50m, yet on arrival back home, the fields near me at 140m had no trace of snow. I think, because of the narrowness of the valley at Dunkeld, this promotes both higher rainfall totals & a greater likelihood of snow in marginal situations, implying that the conditions over the surrounding high ground are "carried over" into the valley. Just a thought, but let me know if you have any other theories.
Today's highest temperature was 4.1, while 8.3mms of rain fell between 0830& 1630.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Rain becoming lighter & dying out during this evening. Mainly dry overnight, with perhaps a few cloud breaks. Temperatures falling close to zero, so some icy patches are likely following all the rain.
OUTLOOK
WEDNESDAY will be a better day. It will be dry, with bright skies & a touch less cold at about 6 or 7 degrees.
MARCH at the HALF-WAY MARK
Mean maximum temperature,6.9 (About 1.5 BELOW long-term average). Mean minimum temperature,+0.8 (About 0.3 BELOW long-term average). RAINFALL up to 1630Hrs today, 46.7mms (57% of whole month's average total.)

TUESDAY 15th MARCH
HEADLINES @ 0830Hrs
A dry start at half past eight, but rain is already "knocking on the door". I will do some figures later, for the "state of play" at the half- way stage in March.
PITLOCHRY TODAY
A cloudy day ahead, with rain soon arriving from the SW& persisting for a few hours. There may be some drier intervals late in the day. It will again be somewhat on the cold side, with highest temperatures pegged to about 5 degrees, with a fresh SE breeze. It is just possible there may be a few flakes of snow mixed in with the heavier rain, but accumulations of snow today are reserved for ground above about 250m.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Cloudy for the most part, perhaps with a little rain left over, but becoming dry overnight, with temperatures close to zero or +1.
OUTLOOK
WEDNESDAY is likely to be rather cloudy, but mainly dry. There may be a few bright intervals in the afternoon. Feeling a touch milder at 6 or7 degrees. THURSDAY & FRIDAY will become rather colder again.

MONDAY 14th MARCH----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
Just a little occasional light rain this morning, but mainly dry, with a few cloud breaks in the eastern sky this afternoon. Feeling less cold, with lighter winds & much less wind--maximum temperature 5.6 degrees. Still lots of snow on the Ben(the photo below sees it in sunny, snow-covered splendour)
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Mainly dry, with some breaks in the cloud. Temperatures falling close to zero.
OUTLOOK
Becoming cloudy by morning, with a belt of sleet or wet snow moving in. Snow may accumulate at heights above about 200m & there could be some slushy snow for a time at lower levels. More details in the morning.
During the REST of the WEEK, it will often be rather cloudy, with some light rain & drizzle at times & becoming colder again later.

THE MET OFFICE CLIMATE STATION (FASKALLY)
This climate station, close to the shore of Loch Faskally, is manned by a team of staff working at the Fisheries. Data is forwarded to the Met Office in Edinburgh at the end of each month & is not normally made available to the public. It assists in providing averages & extremes for the Pitlochry area, that I can make use of.
MONDAY 14th MARCH
HEADLINES @ 0845Hrs
No rail services between Perth & Inverness at present due to snow conditions between Blair Atholl & Inverness. There's still plenty of snow on the Ben & with a cloud break near-by, it is lit up by a fleeting glimpse of sunshine at 0842. Otherwise, a cold & largely cloudy morning, with all snow gone at this altitude.
PITLOCHRY TODAY
Just the chance of an odd passing shower during the early morning & equally, there could be an odd cloud break.Generally, however, the day will stay mostly cloudy, but dry. Winds will not be as strong as yesterday, but still feeling cold at around 4 or5 degrees as a maximum.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A dry evening & night is expected. There will be some good cloud breaks & with lighter winds, frost is on the cards, with a miimum around -2 degrees.
OUTLOOK
TUESDAY is expected to be cloudy, with rain & perhaps some sleet spreading in. The hills may see further snow. The rain may be rather persistent, lasting into the evening. It should, however, be a little less cold. WEDNESDAY should see less in the way of rain, but towards the END of the WEEK, it threatens to turn colder, while still remaining unsettled.

SUNDAY 13th MARCH----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
The day remained just about dry, but it felt particularly cold in the strong NNE wind. The maximum temperature reached 4.8 (3.5 degrees below normal). This afternoon, cloud broke somewhat around Ben Vrackie & neighbouring high ground, but re-formed again as it moved further south. This is probably caused by the descent of air from the Cairngorms & this set-up remained in place for most of the afternoon. Incidentally, I had a report this morning, of around 4 inches of snow in the Calvine area. The Inverness to Kings Cross rail service was nearly 70mins late into Pitlochry this morning, due, I suspect, to weather conditions further north.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A cold, windy night is expected & some more rain or sleet is likely, though mostly light. There may be some snow above about 200 to 250 metres. Temperatures will fall to about 1 or 2 degrees.
OUTLOOK
MONDAY through to THURSDAY will probably be a rather cloudy period, though the wind should die down & daytime temperature values rise a little. WEDNESDAY may well be the best day, with THURSDAY endind up turning colder again.
HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Cloudy, windy & cold. There's already been a little sleet earlier on. Yesterday & overnight gave some deep snowfalls to higher ground. At 0600Hrs, Aviemore was reporting 29cms!! There must have been significant differences in the amount of snow received between 150 & 250 metres. (Much of Pitlochry is between 90 & 170ms)
PITLOCHRY TODAY
A mainly cloudy day. There will be some outbreaks of mainly light rain or sleet, but also some drier spells. Winds will be fresh from the NE & the maximum temperature will reach around 4 degrees, well below normal.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
This period will remain generally cloudy & some further light rain or sleet is likely at times. The minimum temperature will be close to 1 degree.
OUTLOOK

SATURDAY 12th MARCH----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1630Hrs
All in all, Pitlochry appears to have escaped the worst of things today. After some dry snow at first, which began to accumulate, much of the rest of the day saw the snow begin to turn wetter & eventually become sleet. Rainfall amounts in total today, only added up to 5.3 mms, while the thermometer gradually rose from 0.4 to 2 degrees.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Further spells of sleet, especially before midnight. Later in the night, there should be some drier spells, but with further occasional rain or sleet. Temperatures could fall back down to give a frost, with resulting icy patches.
OUTLOOK
Perhaps rather cloudy to start with on SUNDAY, but a better day in prospect with dry spells & a few cloud breaks. A little less cold than today.
MONDAY & WEDNESDAY should be mainly dry & bright at times: TUESDAY more cloudy with some rain. Temperatures still somewhat below normal.

SATURDAY 12th MARCH
HEADLINES @ 0900Hrs
Overcast, with moderate snow & a temperature of +0.4 degrees. Already, over 2cms has fallen. There is snow around Perth, though at 0800, Dundee was at +2 with sleet reported. The M90 had snow on the carriageway to the south of Perth.
PITLOCHRY TODAY
A warm front over S. Scotland is moving slowly northwards into colder air. The day is expected to stay mostly overcast, with long periods of snow. Some of this snow is likely to be moderate to heavy at times. Although on the lowest land, close to the coast, some of the snow will become wet & sleety, Pitlochry is likely to have snow accumulations of at least 10cms & some of the higher, outlying districts may have 15 to 20 cms. Walking in the Grampians is not recommended. The temperature will spend much of the time between zero & +2. Winds will be from the NE, becoming strong in higher, exposed places.
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
There will be a gradual tendency for the snow to turn wetter & more sleety with time & become lighter & more occasional.
OUTLOOK
SUNDAY should see an improvement, with perhaps some sleet initially, but becoming drier later & a degree or two less cold.

FRIDAY 11th MARCH----EVENING
UPDATE @ 1730Hrs
The day began with 3 cms of fresh snow & one or two more snow showers occurred during the morning. However, the lying snow melted quickly, with the day's highest temperature reaching 5.5 degrees(almost 3 degrees below normal)
THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Mainly dry & though rather cloudy at times, there should be a few clear spells, leading to a slight frost.
OUTLOOK
SATURDAY----An area of slow-moving rain & sleet over areas to the south of us, will readily turn to snow as it pushes north into the Highlands. Perhaps low-lying parts, especially close to the East Coast, may escape with sleet or wet snow, but it would appear that our area is lined up for several hours of snow, though perhaps it may be dry to start the day. Places above about 250m are likely to see substantial falls of at least 15cms. The town itself should expect falls of up to 10cms. For much of the time, temperatures will hover between 0 & 2 degrees, with winds from the NE. SUNDAY is likely to continue wintry, though any further snow accumulations are most likely a.m.
A FURTHER UPDATE WILL APPEAR AROUND 0900Hrs SATURDAY

COULD IT BE AS BAD AS THIS DURING THE WEEKEND?
Only 3cms this morning & the sun is working to melt it quickly. However, things could get somewhat worse during Saturday, perhaps more like conditions in the photograph! Keep checking the forecasts to see what sort of amounts are expected.
