SATURDAY 1st JANUARY

A HAPPY, HEALTHY & PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO ALL READERS

We have all just experienced the coldest December in our lifetimes(to date!)   Average maximum temp. +0.3(normal value +5.7), average minimum temperature -7.2(normal value -0.3). The last cold December of 1981, has been well & truly eclipsed.    MORE DETAILS ABOUT DECEMBER IN A FEW DAY'S TIME.

It's been a brighter day today & quite a bit milder, Maximum temp.5.9.   At 1800hrs, it was still 5.7  . Despite this, the car thermometer was showing just 1degree when we left Perth at 1530 & there were some mist bands in the Tay valley north of Dunkeld at 2 degrees

SATURDAY 1st JANUARY 2011

PITLOCHRY TODAY    Cloud breaking to give some sunny spells. Maximum temperature 3 degrees

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT    Clear spells & light winds will allow temperatures to fall to -5 to -7.

OUTLOOK     Sunday fine & dry. The startof next week, more unsettled.
NO UPDATE AVAILABLE THIS EVENING    (2010 figures will be published in a day or two.)

HEADLINES
Just shallow mist this morning, with cloud breaks above. The overnight minimum was -0.1 & current temperature +0.4.

PITLOCHRY TODAY
A dry day & although misty at first, it should become brighter than yesterday with some sunshine. Maximum temperature around 3 or 4 degrees.

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
A clear start but becoming cloudy with a short spell of light rain in the wee small hours, followed by clear weather with a slight frost.

FURTHER OUTLOOK
Dry & bright, but feeling cold on both Saturday & Sunday. Maximum temperature 2 or 3 degrees.

DECEMBER 1981 was the coldest December in Pitlochry’s records. The average maximum temperature that month was + 1.9, while the average minimum was -5.4. So far this December, we are COLDER than this record month. However, although 1981 was overall the coldest December on record, 1995 actually had the coldest day (-10.5 max.) & the coldest night (-18.2 min). There appears every likelihood that December 2010 will remain cold & topple the record held by 1981.

THURSDAY 30th DECEMBER---EVENING UPDATE

I escaped the mist & murk of Pitlochry this afternoon & ended up at the Falls of Bruar. Conditions under foot were treacherous, but the delights of seeing the spectacular ice accumulations on the river & at the falls certainly made the walk worthwhile. What a pity I didn't take a camera!   Incidentally, much of the high ground was above the mist & enjoying broken cloud.

UPDATE @ 1700Hrs
Once again, very disappointing, with the mist & murk very persistent around the town, but not on the hills. The maximum temperature was only +1.9 & the current temperature + 0.6--( & this is supposed to be a MILD interlude!)

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT
Still mist around, but the cloud above the mist is well broken & will allow temperatures to fall. So a lttle colder than last night, with a likely minimum of around -2. Icy patches likely on roads & pavements.

FURTHER OUTLOOK
Dry & brighter on Friday. A dry, bright & cold start to 2011.

DECEMBER 1981 was the coldest December in Pitlochry’s records. The average maximum temperature that month was + 1.9, while the average minimum was -5.4. So far this December, we are COLDER than this record month. THURSDAY 30th DECEMBER @ 0900Hrs

HEADLINES @ 0900HRS   Very misty out there & a touch colder than yesterday(minimum -0.1, currently +0.3) Only 4cms of lying snow left now. This misty, murky weather isn't exactly exciting, but there again, perhaps we've had enough excitement already this month!!

PITLOCHRY TODAY      The emphasis still on low cloud, mist & murk, though there is a chance of some brighter  interludes.Maximum temperatures should reach around 3 degrees .

THIS EVENING & TONIGHT    Partly cloudy, but a better chance of a few clear spells which will result in a slight frost .

OUTLOOK    A good deal of dry weather between Friday & Sunday, but it will feel colder on both Saturday & Sunday with winds from  the north .
